Question:
My Sony 32FX60 TV seems to have developed a strange picture fault. The bottom left corner of the tube appears to be displaying flesh tones as a nice shade of purple and blue as green. I have only just noticed this over the weekend and I am sure that I would have noticed it before now if the problem has been there for some time. It only affects the corner of the screen with an area reaching about 2 inches in each direction (left, up, and towards the centre).
Is this the first sign of impending tube failure? I've had it almost 4 years and bought it from John Lewis so it is still covered by their 5 year guarantee. Anyone had to use JL's 5-year guarantee policy before? Will I get a repair or replacement?
Have you recently moved an unshielded speaker near it? Magnets produce al kinds of lovely effects.
That was my first thought but the front speakers are 3 foot away and the centre is underneath the TV - where it has been since owning the TV. Nothing has changed - apart from recently upgrading my Tivo HDD to a 120Gig Samsung... the Tivo is located 2 shelves down under the TV and the HDD would be nearest to that corner of the TV tube. I can't believe it is the cause but I shall try powering off the TiVo and moving it away to see what happens.
Sounds like a magnetic field to me - if it's only happened since you changed the drive then that could well be the suspect.
I only use the stand-by mode on my Sony 32FX65, every few months I turn it off via the TV switch, this does something... I can't remember the name of it, try it overnight it might work.
cheers Steve
Rainfall,if you power off and then on it degausses the tube.
De-gausing is what Rainfall means
Usually the tv makes a funny noise when switched on, if it's degausing (Does on my Sony anyway)
Delh
I have a KV32FX60 and you do deguass it by turning it off and on with the hard power switch.
Its probably worth turning the TV off and leaving it overnight before powering on again.
John Lewis should be able to send an engineer out to look at it if that doesn't work. They will probably use a deguassing wand to fix it.
I always turn my TV off with the hard power switch every night, I've never understood why anyone would leave it on standby but each to their own I guess.
I do leave my Sony on standby when not using it I admit, but I'm sure it degausses even when coming out of standby.
The discolouration was not as apparent last night when I was watching TV although I did notice that on the full screen bright orange Sky page you get at commercial breaks the bottom-right corner was more purple than orange.
I still haven't moved the TiVo away from its shelf position under the TV yet so I guess I should try this and see if the discolouration dissappears before calling an engineer.
Thanks for all your replies anyway!
Phil.
