First amp ideas.
Question:

I have been thinking about getting an Amp for a while now as I have been using a Goodmans player with a built in decoder and I am looking to upgrade, looking ideally for a DTS amp in the 300-600 pound area although if there 5.1 would be better through an Amp and cheaper I would go that route ( its only a bedroom set up ).
I wonder if anyone can help im a total newbie to sound setups.

Answers:

Most amps in that price range will do both DTS and 5.1 I would suggest looking at these two:
Marantz SR4200 £210.00
Denon AVR-1802 £275.00
both at www.hifijunkies.co.uk in their clearance sale.
or try www.richersounds.co.uk they may be cheaper there.

Pioneer 811s £302 from Unbeatable. 6.1 Discreet, DPLII etc etc
http://www.unbeatable.co.uk/default.asp?page=product&sku=106737
I have one of these in the US and they are a superb budget 6.1 Amp IMO.
The Denon and Marantz mentioned above are also good amps.

Thanks a lot for the feedback those suggestions look pretty good, not too sure which I am going to go for, a lot cheaper than I had planned also.

Also the Yamaha RXV630RDS, £330 from Richer Sounds. Won the EISA home theatre amp award this year.

Does this actually do 6.1 Discrete though? The Yamaha site just says: DTS "ES-Compatible". this may be just that it hasn't get certification, or maybe just it can only decode matrixed 6.1?
The higher end models (1300) are labled as DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, DTS-ES Discrete 6.1

It only does matrixed, but I don't have space for a sixth speaker anyway :( Apparently, a sixth channel doesn't make much difference anyway (thats not just from sales people anyway.) I'm not too sure how much true 6.1 amps cost, but £330 for an amp that retails at £450 is a bargain anyway in my book :D No HiFi shop would match it either, because its cheaper than the price they actually pay Yamaha for them :o

The Pioneer I listed above is a true 6.1 amp and I have it. I find the 6th channel adds a nice about of fill in if the film is encoded well (e.g. LOTR-EE and Balde 2). Also if left on all the time, it can produce a better soundscape for 5.1 material.
