Question:
are 5.1 sountracks normally downmixed to Stereo or Pro Logic ?
They can be if you only have stereo/DPL setup. As DPL is matrixed into the stereo signal then a 5.1 downmix will become DPL usually.
well i do have a DPL setup built into my TV.
but not sure whether they are just passing the front Stereo sound to the rear speakers. Or whether there is a separate mono rear channel.

Should be mono in the rears, but the rear channel is matrixed (mixed in with) the front stereo signal so to get DPL you only need to give the decoder (in this case your TV) a stereo 2-channel signal and it will extract the rear channel from that.
