Freeview through a normal aerial?
Question:

Saw in Curry's today a freeview box made by Labgear (I think) which seemed to claim that it would work through a normal TV aerial. I think the technology was call Setpal (?) their was also a Daewoo model making the same claim.
Anyone know if this does what it says?

Answers:

I got ONdigital through a normal aerial. It shouldn't be a problem to get freeview.

Bought a pioneer ex on digital box a few months ago. Apparantly the signal has recently been boosted and we have no problem recieving a good picture.

Unless you've got a really old knackerd aerial every freeview box works through a normal aerial.

Thanks for the comments. I'd previously been told that you had little chance of a decent picture with aerials over 3 years old. Probably just sales pitch to buy a new aerial.

I use freeview w/ my normal aerial, can't get the hits or tmf tho...

I use my ondigital box with a portable aerial, so I'd imagine that you'd have few problems with a rooftop aerial.

Aerials designed for analog reduced interferance by only working within certain bands. This stopped cross interferance between neighbouring transmitters. Digital dispensed with this and the upgrades fitted were 'wideband' covering the whole spectrum thus allowing reception of all programmes. The digital format effectively gets rid of the issue of interferance from other transmissions. Older or lower gain antennas do come into the equation and was part of the reason for ITV digitals failure.

Yes indeed a sales pitch. Really is no reason to renew your aerial unless it's really old. The only thing I would make sure of it that you have screened cable.

Mine works fine with a set top aerial, if anything, the signal is too strong! The power meter is off the scale.
I do have line of sight to Crystal Palace though!

I guess the location is a significant factor as well. Anyone in Bedford getting good reception on Freeview?
