Matrixed/discrete sound?
Question:

Hi,
What is matrixed sound, and what are the advantages disadvantages of Matrixed vs Discrete?
i.e. What is better?
Thanks.

Answers:

Matrixed sound means that the channel is mixed in with other discreet channels.
The most basic and most common is Pro Logic, it has a surround channel matrixed into the 2 front channels, ie 2 discreet and 1 matrixed. PL2 is 2 discreet and 2 matrixed.
DD's 6 channel is 5 discreet and 1 matrixed (with the two rear channels)
DTS's 6 channel is 6 discreet
As for which is better, well discreet logically should be has you haven't had to mess with any other channels. But that depends on how the matrix math used to combine works...I'm not sure how much alteration the discreet channels go through to contain the matrix information.
