Question:
Can anyone tell me what exactly happens when your laser is 'knackered'? When I opened up my Sony player for a look myself I could see that the laser was still firing out beams onto the disk, but the disk would not spin, so I had thought that it must be the motor that turns the disk that had packed in.
Just got a call from a local electronics place that are having a look at and they say it's the laser that aint working, but I had thought that if it wasnt working then there would be no beams, if you know what I mean!
Anyhoo, does anyone know of where I could get a replacement laser from, or would it have to be Sony?
Cheers for any help/advice....
Ard Electronics do a Sony (compatible ?) DVD Laser assembly for £26 odd. No affilation to them just saw it in a recent flyer.
Mike.
EDIT: You were probably going to ask so I'm saving you the trouble.

Cheers very much for the info and link Flimber, appreciated! :)
Thats interesting. A friend of mine with a 725 has the same problem. I'm saving this thread to show him whn he finishes work. I think this might save him a lot of money he was going to take it to some butcher engineer to get it repaired (and you know the guy would end up with a small bag of "spare bits")
What a cheap skate
In my house as soon as something shows ANY sign of failure it is duly smashed into little peices with an axe and then replaced :)
A similar thing happened to my 336 after 15 months so I contacted Sony and they told me to send them a written letter outlining the problem and a written estimate from a Sony authorised repair centre.
I made it quite clear i knew there was a problem with the cheap lasers they were using and that I have purchased many Sony products over the years. I was most dissapointed with the build quality of this machine.
I paid £23 for the estimate plus a further £90 for a new laser, and after a few more letters Sony refunded me the full amount.
After six months the laser as started to go again, so i gave it to my parents for occasional use and bought a new one.
My Sony 536 is on the floor behind me rotting; it's like new but lasted just about a year and has all the hallmarks of the cheap laser problem; won't read discs etc.
Does anyone know if the link above is a universal laser which will fit all Sony machines? Further, is it straightforward to replace the laser in them...
I am considering a purchase to maybe try and revitalise the player before I chuck it in the bin!
Tbh with the cost of new players so low now for really good kit I'd be tempted to take the chance to upgrade mate.
Tell the missus it's buggered, quick while you have the chance
A non spinning disk is nothing to do with the laser...???
My 536 died too, unable to read disks (disk was spinning) and £120 later was returned in working order. However it's inability to read anything other than DVD and CD means it has now been relegated to 2nd player behind my Panasonic. That is despite the Sony being the more user friendly player (2 scarts, better menu's, brighter RGB operation, optical and digital o/p...)
I have a Sony 325 (I think thats the model no) anyhow occasionally it keeps skipping when playing. Sometimes it will jump chapters at a time.
If I switch the player off totally and try again it is often ok for a few weeks. Does this sound like the same or similar problem?
Cheers

Yes mine is totally useless now 2 years old. Getting a combination of No disc, skipping, chapter skipping and C:13
I will never buy another Sony again.
Dekim thats how mine started, it will only get worse mate.
I have to agree; I wouldn never buy a Sony again - it's truly alarming how many of their players have lasted just about 18months before becoming unusable. Shocking for a manufacturer of that magnitude.
You would think that with so many defunct players that Sony could be forced into rectifying the situation somehow as it clearly shows an inadequate product specification.
A DVD players lifespan should well exceed 18 months, no?
YOu are right it is happening more frequently. Sometimes I just give up and it is ok the next day. I think it started happening on mine after about 18 months. looks like its time to start saving for a better player. (not a Sony!!)
