Question:
I have tried looking on the net and in google.groups for some help/advice/info but I couldn't find the exact sort of guidance I need. So my apologies if this has been asked many times before.
I currently have
* 32" Mitsubishi Black Diamond Widescreen TV
* Samsung 709 DVD player
I connect the 709 to the TV via RGB scart and have phono leads going from the 709 into a stereo.
I want to upgrade the sound system, but I haven't got a massive budget. I was thinking of the DigiTheatre DTS System.
Would I be better off, buying an Amp and speakers?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

You sure would. I would advise a trip to your local Richersounds shop and look at the Sherwood at 119 pounds and the Technics or Eltax packages from 60-120 quid for all five speakers.
I couldn't agree more. Start off low budget as Just suggests to get on the ladder and then upgrade when you know what to look for and the wallet allows.
Until recently, I had a Sherwood DD/DTS receiver from Richer Sounds and it was fab - did me proud for years.
Now this really isn't going to help (I know), but I've gone down the digitheatre DTS route. My main goals where dvd only surround sound in practically no space. An amp or receiver needs a shelf, speakers are always going to require positioning but the ones in a d.dts are very small - maybe only 15cm tall (probs find a better spec on their website) etc etc. The d.dts is somewhat different, you have a sub with all the amps in it that you connect all 4 surround speakers to plus the centre speaker (the sats are quite small as all bass is routed to the sub) ... the centre speaker also has all the control on it (power, source etc) plus the IR receiver. In addition I got the 8m extension cable for the centre (its not a normal speaker cable, actually a 10 way (or more) ribbon). Result is that I have the sub positioned at the back of the room in a corner created by 2 sofas (theres a lamp and table in there too), cables running to the front corners for front sats, the ribbon for the centre, and the 2 rears hooked in behind the tv viewing sofa. No shelf required for the amp - the centre sits ontop of the dvd player which all sits on the tv stand, sats plonk themselves in the corners out of the way.
The amp and speaker route is def the way to go for upgradablity, you can start upgrading the amp, maybe change just the fronts etc etc ... but thats not what i wanted, dolby digital/DTS/pro logic please, discretely ... and with no temptation to upgrade willy nilly :) !

Many thanks for your comments, a trip to Richersounds sounds like a good place to start.
