Digital Camcorders Digital 8 or Mini DV
Question:

I'm looking for a digital camcorder and I am unsure which would be better Digital 8 or Mini DV.
I don't have an old 8mm tapes so I don't need the bakcwards compability.

Answers:

Mini DV - smaller, better quality and easy to move between PC and camera if you get one with DV in/out.

Agree 100%..

Digital 8 will limit you to mostly Sony equipment. Mini DV is definately the defacto standard.

don't forget European Union DV cameras are nEUtered stopping you recording to them via firewire. Some cameras have hacks available, may be worth looking for one that is easy to modify.

Is the quality of Mini DV really better than Digital 8? You can do everything a Mini DV can do with a Digital 8 camera bar the size issue. If you don't interoperability with other Mini DV equipment then I'd get whatever is cheapest.
Personally, I've found that the size issue of Digital 8 cameras hasn't hindered me in the slightest as I use a Steadicam Jr with it (or at least did till I left it on the train) and that the quality was excellent and even a little better than Mini DV.
