dvd recorder
Question:

would like to buy a dvd recorder.narrow down to philips dvdr 880 or Panasonic DMR-E30EBS.Could anybody help me out at all.thanks.

Let the Bun fight begin!!!!!
my preference is for the philips camp, especially if you want to hook up your digital camcorder
the (cheaper) Panasonics dont have a firewire input,
if you just want to "time shift" the Panasonic is also a good Looking machine

You might want to consider waiting until February, when Pioneer is due to bring out two new budget DVD recorders.
The existing Pioneer 7000 is considered by many to offer the best recording performance, and these new machines are likely to employ the same mechanics. Pioneer also supports rewriteable DVD-RW disks, while the DVR-77 will boast a built-in hard drive.

DVD+R may arguably be the better format, and machines from lone +R recorder manufacturer Philips certainly seem to be selling well in the UK. However, since returning a troubled Philips 880 (receiving no help whatsoever from Philips) I've discovered countless reports of glitches and bugs with these machines, and at the moment I'd advise staying well clear.
Look here for countless firsthand woes on a pro DVD+R forum...

Check out the pro DVD+R discussion forum listed above or do a Google search for endless accounts of problems with the Philips DVD recorders including...
Machines gradually refusing to read pre-recorded disks...
Switching off during recordings...
The timer not working...
The machine locking up completely...
White-outs during recordings from video...
Failure to finalise disks...
Blocky lines appearing in recordings...
Successfully recorded disks later refusing to be recognised.
Several software upgrades have been made available to download in a bid to solve these problems, but in many cases they've just made things worse.
You may be very lucky and get a machine that's entirely fault free.
I wasn't. :(
