amp/speakers
Question:

Hi
Can I pick your brains about amps and speakers.
Ive got a Pioneer 454 DVD player and I love it.
Thing is my amp is not digital its a Kenwood KRV7040 Pro logic jobbie, v nice but not digital.
Im looking at upgrading to either of the below amps. Can you let me know if youve got one of these, or have any press/comments to make.
Pioneer VSX - c100 - s (£250 apx)
Yamaha RX - V630RDS (£460 apx)
SONY STR- VA555ES (£799.95) (probably dreaming here unless its really really worth waiting a few pay cheques later.)
Speaker recommendations would be appreciated as well as any other advice regarding purchasing this kind of stuff.
Cheers
Phil

the pioneer vsx c100 is pretty decent, it's what i use and am happy with it though it does'nt have all that much volume compared to most receivers (30wpc compared to like 60-100 on most ) it's still pretty loud though
fits very nicely with pioneer 350/454 just make sure if you do get one that you put the receiver on top of the player and not the other way round like the manual says you can....it will overheat at high volumes if anything is on top of it and will make the dvd player very hot too
i think it was reviewed in a recent hifi magazine recently coupled with a 454 and got a decent review, oh and it costs about 190 quid now, not 250

I think it was What HiFi. I was flicking thru' it in Sainsburys the other day. IIRC it got 5 star, and was coupled (or this that tripled) with a set of ELAC speakers, can't remember the model.
BTW, I also have a VSX-C100, and am very happy with it. I got it from hifistore.co.uk for £190 delivered.

I think the Yamaha 630RDS is very well specced for the price. I'm very happy with mine. and it only cost 320 from Richer Sounds.

Thats what I thought,
I like the look of it... bigtime and What hi fi gave it a very good write up plus I think it won a super test or something.
What about speakers any recomendations on that front?

I ended up buying the Mission FS2-AV flat panel speakers. The whole set-up sounds great to me, but I don't have a lot of experience with other systems !
I bought the missions from empiredirect. If I'd had a bit more money to spend, I would have considered the Kef Eggs.

I would say go for the yamaha, most people that ive spoken to have had nothing bad to say about it. I have a sony str db-940 coupled with mission 701s / +surrounds and am pretty pleased with it all as it was bargin basement stuff from richer sounds.. i have doubts about what-hifi's ratings as the only true way to see if you like the kit is to visit in store and have a listen...

I've had the 620RDS (the predecessor to the 630 - no DPL2) for about a year along with Mission M74, M7DS, M7C1 and a Paradigm sub. I still find the sound awesome - better than the local multiplex.
Mission speakers do get consistently good reviews at their price point. The finish may not be B&W, but they sound (almost) as good.

Some people say that some of the Yams can sound a little harsh when you turn them up a bit when listening to plain old music. Might be something to bear in mind - although personally I kind of like them.

I did want an amp equally respected for both Home cinema sound and normal audio playback.
