Question:
After recently purchasing the excellent Pioneer DV-350 I'm after an AV amp and speakers.
Total budget is around £400.
Features the amp must have:
Be reasonably capable at reproducing music (from CDs played in the DV-350)
Have Pro Logic 2 (could do without for a bargain amp)
Be silver (or possibly gold)
Be future proof - not sure what that means since I never intend to go to 6 or 7.1
Be powerful enough to fill a largeish room
Inc. receiver
So basically the most musical silver AV amp for <£200!
Features the speakers must have:
Be gutsy enough not to need a sub
Not bothered about size, in fact big is good
Not be black
Decent enough front pair (probably floor standers) for CD music
I just need somewhere to start looking, won't be buying them for a couple of months. Could I have some suggestions of amps and speakers to look at?
You might want to stretch your budget if you need it for music too, as AV stuff struggles in the mid ranges and high end gear is required for good quality sound. and for 6.1 and pro-logic 2 at that price is going to be tough too matey.
at £200 for good quality you might want to think about going for an all in one instead as your money would go further.
try richer sounds mate for that budget you might just squeeze what you want in but i doubt your gonna get floorstanders even from richer lol.on the amp side try to stay away from sherwood i mean there not bad but try to stick with sony etc if budget allows my friend got a sony amp dts 5.1 etc for 120 qui an it does the job just fine.also you aint gonna get pro logic 2 unless you get an amp secondhand an even then your gonna have to be lucky ,hope that helps oh an his amp is silver lmao
How about dropping the PL2 requirement and upping the budget to £500. Does that improve the options?
Yes mate! but id still say your best budgeting for a CD player too:thumbs: the denon DM30/50 is only about £200 and sounds as good as any Bose system (£1000+) its also in gold. ive never hard the dvd 350 play cd's but i cant see it being very good. Then get an AV reciever from richers in the £200 region and then your left with £300 for speakers, i'd demo those out though and choose a set which your happy sound good with CD's and Films. but don't expect big things though when it comes to having both, it seems you can have one or the other and not both without spending silly money, i currently have a decent set-up and its still flakey with music, as im typing this ive got Metallica - s&m on and the sound is ok but when i put a film on my flat comes to life
The Pioneer VSX-C100 looks pretty good for £190 - would go well with the 350. How is it for music… and since it’s not very powerful should I be more careful selecting ‘efficient’ speakers?
The Marantz SR4200 (2002 model) is a good buy if you're not bothered about running a rear speaker in a 6.1 set-up. It's got far more grunt than the Pioneer, is very well-built and superb with music. Available for £200 (was £400 new). It also comes in a very light (almost silver) gold.
It has PL2 and a tuner.
yikes 200 for that is good...I think I was look at that as an alternative to my Yamaha ax620
Hello clv101
For the money you are willing to spend its pretty tight to get the home cinema items that you have specified, but I think I can offer you a reasonable solution.
The Amp -- As above in previous replys a Marantz SR4200 ( 5 channels 70watt output ) £199.95 in Richer Sounds. Option 2 is avaliable a Marantz SR5200, 6 channel amp ( 90watts x 6 ! )from Hyperfi. They are based in East London.
The speakers -- Wharfdale Diamond Cinema. 2 x Floorstanders, 2 x Rear Shelf speakers and a Center speaker. All rated at 100watts and in mahogany finish, again from Hyperfi. Also the Mision M72 package is also available from Hyperfi for £199.95 in Beech finish. ( You need speaker stands for this though so more cash needed).
All the above items were rated as 5 star products in What Hi*Fi Sound and Vision as its now known. Buy the next edition which will be out on January 15th and look at the adverts in the back.
This only thing to do now is connect them together. Cat5 cable for the speakers, but you will have to buy a digial interconnect for DVD to Amp. A cheap good one will cost £20 max.
Good Luck.
ps To get the movies really rockin' you will need to get a sub. Add it later when you have a few more pounds to spare.
