Question:
Hi,
Can anyone please point me in the right direction for 36" TVs. I currently have a 28" but it just ain't big enough anymore. I've considered 32" but I reckon I'd still want more...
So, I'd be very grateful for any advice about what to look out for as well as any model recommendations.
Thanks
Tosh Strata range rocks! Take a look on avforums.com
I've got the digital version of this Hitachi Natura (http://www.homecinemachoice.com/testbench/index.html) and it's great, can't recommend it enough.

Thanks for the replies. I've been to the AV forums and the Sony KV36FS76 is favourite at the moment but the shortlist also contains:
Philips 36PW9607 - not sure about PixelPlus
Panasonic TX36PL30C
Toshiba 36ZT26
I've read good and bad about all of them but the Sony has the most positive and the least negative so... maybe.
Cheers.
I have a Tosh 36ZPsumminkorother. Lots of bad reports on the 'net but mine is class and everyone who has seen it wants it. My mom-in-law commented the other night when we were all watching Ice Age that it had "Great Reception". Made me laugh, that did. :)
I have a Panasonic 36PF10 (their first 36 incher and no longer made) which I think is fantastic and I love it to bits!
Best purchase of any kind I have ever made!
Personally I don't rate either Sony (look closely at the picture - does it look concave to you?) or particularly Phillips.
Go for either Toshiba or Panasonic. The picture frame type like the Highlanders is a class set :smokin:

I have a pure-flat (whatever they are called) computer monitor, and for the first few days it does look concave, but you get used to it.
The other problem with these kind of screens is the two support wires that leave two thin lines accross the screen. Though, with a big TV, and a reasonable viewing distance, you probably can't see them.
the phillips 9607 is awesome with dvd and consoles
pixel plus can look stunning ,just look at gladiator or donnie darko for ultimate clarity
an awesome set
Anyone got experience of PixelPlus ?
For the amount that you're thinking of spending on a 36" TV, have you thought about a projector? You can get the Panasonic AE300 imported from Japan for around 1300 quid IIRC which would definately satisfy the need for a bigger screen. I also currently have a 28" TV and looked into 36" but that still wasn't big enough so I think I'm gonna get the AE300.
I've got the Sony 36" and it is a superb set with a fantastic picture. I upgraded from a Philips 32" thinking it would keep me happy but I now want more! Maybe I should have gone for a 42" or 50" RP set. Too late now tho', I paid nearly the full price and the missus would never let me change it! Well not for say 10 years anyway!
Dave
Toshiba 36ZP18P was a fantastic set, highly recommended.
Lovely clear picture, good looking and bloody heavy too!
:smokin:
I have the Tosh. 36ZT29B, it is albsolutely fantastic. Picture is clear and sharp with the integrated digital tuner. It is superb with component connection with my Tosh dvd player! I got it for £1479 beofre x-mas from robertsons, inc delivery. I think someone offered in for less, check price-runner.
TOtally recommend it :)

Hi Whizz One issue to consider before you buy the 36" is check you have enough room, from a 28 to 36 is BIG! (check the depth)
I would say keep the 28" & buy a Panny projector just for the movies..I have a Sony 32" & Panny PT-AE 100E for the movie,
cheers Steve
*HOWEVER* rainfall, if you have a oldern styled house (such as myself) projectors will not fit in the style for the living room....
Unless you have a seperate cinema room, in which case, go for it :)
I need to clear my upstairs rooms so I can make my own cinema upstairs
I have the Panasonic TX36PB50, can't fault it. Either 100Hz or Pro scan, i sit fairly close to the TV so pro scan is a god send. It 5.1 built in but have never used it, so can't comment of that.
I have the Sony 36inch FS70.
The DRC-MF processing on this TV is awesome. When fed with a good quality feed the picture can only be described as stunning.
It also has cool features on it. My favourite being mutliple tuners, which means when football is on and the missus wants to watch eastenders you can split the screen in two and watch eastenders but still see the footlball on the other side of the screen. The sound for the football also comes out of the headphone socket. Not that youy would want to use that with Andy Gray commentating.
This feature is also great for playing the PS2 while the missus watches TV.
hi there,
i also have the 36ZT29 its a really nice set, takes a while to tweak around with the settings. but once that is all sorted:thumbs:
got this 2 weeks ago and loving it:D
I've had the Sony 36FS76 for around six weeks and I think it is a superb set especially when calibrated off the default settings. It still has the wow factor when playing DVDs. Mind you everyone will say their choice is best. It's not likely many are going to say that they just spent around £1500 on something they think it dreadful (unless it's in the avforums in which case every crt tv has faults though this Sony has the fewest so far).
I'd recommend you to go to a shop (even if you want to buy online) and ask for the tv you are interested in to be hooked up to a dvd player and make sure it is in RGB mode. Lower the contrast and sharpness on the TV and play some DVDs you know well and see which picture you like best. I spent an hour with the pixel plus set and ended up choosing the Sony as I just did not like the Philips's unnatural picture. Others love it though so each to their own. The Tosh is cheaper but I didn't like the bulk of the TV and its stand. I preferred the Sony's pic but it's a close thing and down to personal preference.

Rainfall, I hadn't really thought of a projector but I'm struggling to imagine how it would fit in my living room. Due to the shape of the room and position of the windows and doors I can really only have the TV in one corner only and the sofa in the diagonal opposite. The corner is a weird shape and just happens to be perfect for a deep TV (in fact there's a space behind my 28" which is wasted now so a 36" would fill it up nicely!). I'm not sure how a projector would fit!
Plus I'm not sure of the picture quality of these cheaper projectors. We use Litepro's at work and they look great but cost £10k.
Enigma, I take your point about opinions. If you read the avforums too deeply you'd never buy anything (or you'd buy everything). Maybe I'll go try some DVDs in a shop as you suggest.
Thanks all for the comments... very much appreciated.

Great looking set too but if I was buying a new tv tomommow I would go for the Strata equivelent for it's adjustable geometry & progressive scan abilities :)
