2 sec delay playing music arrrgghh!!!
Question:

Right OK who can help here, I'm currently using my DVD player as my source for playing CD's and MP3 through my hi-fi setup. Previously I had a cheap Supervision 2500 DVD player and remember reading in a review saying that it had problems with a delay at the start of audio/mp3 CD's so I opted for a nice new Pioneer 350 quite some time ago and I find that I'm still having the same problem. Anyone else find this, I think the problem maybe something to do with my system controller though but you never know.

Answers:

Are you using CD/RW discs? My player takes a lot longer to start these disks, compared to CDr's.

I seem to remember from previous posts you have a DTS Linn processor. Not familiar with the set-up menu on that, but I have a Tag AV32R and when it was first installed it would cut a fraction of a second off the start of CD tracks.
This was because of an option in a menu called 'DTS Delay'. According to the Tag manual this is because there is a chance of some white noise coming through to the speakers when playing DTS CDs, so DTS Delay mutes the sound while the processor decides how to decode it.
I don't have any DTS CDs so had no worries about setting DTS Delay to 'off' with the result that CD tracks are no longer clipped at the start.
This does not affect DTS / DD DVDs as the type of soundtrack is flagged for the processor

mmm, yep, your right still using the Linn 5103 but there's no option to turn off anything like that and the box defualts to stereo anyway the way I have it set up so can't see it being that although it does seem to be decoding delay type thing.
Bamse: Nah, it's the same for original CD's aswell, it's not so much a delay as cutting off the first few seconds.
I'll have a mess about with it tomorrow and see if I cn come up with anything. Anyone else any ideas?

bygino, are you connecting the pioneer 350 via an optical cable to your amp?
I used to get a delay like this with a sony amp unless I forced it to play through the phonos.

Answers:

Nah, I'm using the coax digital, tried everything I can think of and it's still doing it, must just be something to do with the decoding I think, plays straight away through scart to my telly so I assume it must be the 5103 but I've just had another thought, my klouts are getting a bit old now but I really cant see that beig the problem.

I have the exact same problem using a Pioneer 454 and Videologic dts theatre with a coaxial cable. Even dvd's miss a couple of seconds of sound when entering a new menu/section, very annoying for moments where someone starts talking straight away when you press play but you have to miss the first few words as it sorts itself out :[ I always figured it was an optical cable thing until i switched over to coaxial but it remains.

Answers:

yes, bygino, an optical OR coax cable would have this affect.
on my old sony 925 I just used a separate input for dvds (coax or optical), and standard stereo phonos for another input.
the amp didn't seem to be able to auto-detect what the audio was so it was the easiest workaround.
its not specific to the dvd player, even a minidisc or cd player with optical outs caused the problem.

Answers:

from the linn manual, page 26
'When using a digital connecter an extra option field is shown - auto detect. When using a cd player on a digital connecter, set auto detect to 'NO'
Have you tried this?

Answers:

Right, forgot all aout this for a while.
I had a mess about with it and the manual is actually wrong, there is no selection for autodetect. I just don't get it!
Anyone any more ideas before I contact Linn and end up looking like a right idiot for missing something stoopid!

Answers:

no joy just trying it with phonos then?

Answers:

Nope Martin, still the same with just the phonos (That's what I use from my Cable TV)
