Question:
When i connect my DVD and Home Theatre using the digital coax cable there is no sound(analog works fine). I am not sure if the problem is the DVD output or the Home theatre or the cable maybe (the cable has been continuity checked and seems fine).
I have done the following.
1. Set the DVD to digital output.
2. Playing Lord of the Rings DVD (set to DTS 5.1)
3. Correct lead between DVD and Amplifier.
Q. Is there anyway i can ascertain that the DVD is giving a digital output (i.e. feed the digital output into an analog input on the amp??).
You need to change the amp settings to digital and the dvd player to RAW. if you have done that fine i dunno whats going on.

Thanks WP.. I have done all of that but still no audio :norty:
I wonder if there is a way to test that the DVD is actually sending out a digital output short of having an oscilliscope?
I dunno if the problem is the DVD or the amp.
Try dd5.1 first if that works then it could be your AMP isnt playing DTS, does it have a dts decoder in it? and does your dvd player have DTS output?

I'm sure they both have the required bits. No sign of any audio if i only have the coax cable connected whatever I choose as the DVD output though
The DVD is a Mustek V520 http://www.computercorner.co.uk/mustek_dvd.htm (http://)
and I have a VideoLogic DigiTheatre DTS system.
Your dvd player doesnt seem to have DTS output mate, that link only says it has "5.1-Channel Dolby Digital Surround (Digital Output)" so for DTS you need a better dvd player.
WP - There is a DTS symbol on the front of the DVD and the ad blurb says the following :-
Plays MP3, CD-R, CD-RW
Plays Region Free DVD , VideoCD , AudioCD Supports MP3 & DTS Playback Dolby digital surround output AC 3 decoder for 5.1 digital surround-channel IR Remote control Variable playback speed Up to 4x Zoom in realtime play and display Supports PAL / NTSC playback.
Hmmmm ...
Sorry my mistake, have you tried it in DD5.1 then?? someone with a digit-theatre might be able to help, i dont have one im on seperates.

If you stick with DD5.1 for the moment it should be easier to diagnose as i thought it was just the DTS not working. are you sure your DVD player is set to RAW, you need to go into your setting and change the audio settings from PCM to RAW.

There doesn't seem to be a PCM/RAW setting on the DVD options.. just 2 channel or digital .. maybe the DVD just aint sophisticated enough for the job.. but having a digital audio coaxial output you would think there would be a way to do it.. huh?
To me it sounds the like the dvd player isnt up to it, but i could be wrong. PCM is two channel stereo and digital could be anything! sorry i couldnt be of any help but you might want to run a search on your dvd player.

Thanks mate.. I have had a brief look round.. I'll see if i can find out more. I wonder if anyone else on here is using the same DVD player with digital enabled.. I'll post a thread.. and THANKS for your help.. it's appreciated
Im really gutted for you mate, there's nothing worse than getting a new toy and not being able to play with it.
cheers... thats exactly how i feel.. still, it works with analog so I will just have to wait for the 'real thing' a little longer.
I am going to pay Argos a visit tomorrow and get a new player (as i can return it within 16 days) to work out whats actually the problem, player or amp
Once again.. thanks for your valuable time
See my post in the other topic about connecting the cable the right way following (any?) arrows on the cable itself.
I had the same problem as you did. I hope this helps.

Cheers SJ. I am using the digital coax connection on mine so I don't think there is a directional issue with those type of cables.. is there??

No, there isn't a correct direction.
I've got digital audio from my Sony DVP-NS400D DVD player to my Hitachi C28WF535N 28" wide telly and I remember that I had to tell the TV to expect digital audio with a particular SCART input (AV4).
Chris.
know your problem I have the exact setup as you mustek player video logic suround sound. i use to have a H&B player brought from amazon, plugged that in everything spot on, but saw the little mustek and thought that looks smart I'll have one and get rid of the H&B....biggest mistake i made in my life,, first of all connected straight to tv with scart and with an original dvd in rotten picture connected with phono leads no problem, to cut a long story short got the hack to disable macrovision and it worked perfect, picture that is the sound is another problem, I have got the 5.1 sound working after a lot of turning of turning on resetting menu from 2-channel to digital, and it played great, but when i droped over to the tv through my suround sound, and then back again i lost it and had to play around again, to get it back, i have now left it on its setting and don't turn it off, until i find another player or go and buy another H&B, I must say though the mustek will play just about every type of media i put in it with no problems. mustek suport were crap when i told them about the scart and phono connectors, they e-mailed me back asking what a phono connector was, and they are the connectors they supply.
so to conclude this player is fine if you just want to connect to the tv, no problems at all, but if you want to connect to suround sound, then go and get your money back
