Can I connect speakers to a vcr?
Question:

Just brought a Toshiba v632 vcr for the telly in the bedroom. The TV is over 5 years old & has a small speaker. Is there any way I can connect speakers to the vcr without a stereo? Ideally I'd just like some small cheap speakers that plug directly into vcr.
Is it possible - any ideas?
Thanks

Maybe some computer speakers would do the trick. Look for some with phono inputs to take the stereo out fro mteh VCr into them. You could get some nice amped ones with sub for a good price. Whatever you get will need to be amped and it will just be a line level output from the VCR.

Kryten,
Thanks for your reply.
I'm not sure what this means

What's an amped speaker - any sites you could point me in the direction of?
What's a phono output?
Sorry to be so thick

An ampred speaker is one with a built in amplifier.
Phono outupts/inputs are small round connectors with a hole in the center. There should ba a red a white and a yellow one for Right Audio, Left Audio and Video. You would use the Red and White ones for audio hook up to these amplified speakers.
As for sites, I am not sure about best UK sites, I am sure that someone will be able to help. there may be other speakers you could use too that someone may know about.
Do you also have a DVD system on this TV or just VCR?
EDIT: I will try to post some images later when I get home and can upload to my webspace.

agreed.. a cheap set of PC speakers (with volume control) should work fine, and would also allow you to watch TV with the same sound unless recording.
Kryten, remember though we have scart sockets here in UK/ Europe so no red/white/yellow phono sockets... its all built into the scart lead directly.
some VCRs do have separate red/white audio outs though..but not usually on a cheap VCR or under £150.
if you can get a cheap set of PC speakers (£10-£20?) that has phono connectors for the sound coming in, then that would the easiest.
based on the vcr connection's you would only need 1 cable.. plus maybe a scart splitter depending on the vcr's connections I mentioned above...
PC speakers will have standard connectors (either phonos or a headphone type socket), so easy to connect upto.
what is the VCR and can you see any mention of audio left/ right or similar in the manual?

Doh! Forgot about that. My previous UK VCR's I've owned both had full array of audio/video in/out inco 2 x scart and 3 x phonos, but one was Sony and the other Akai Pro Series so neither cheap VCR's.
Most stereo ones have the phono outs for audio though I thought, even the cheaper ones? If not then you can get a scart to phono lead for a reasonable price.

most of the cheap VCRs even stereo/ nicam ones dont have audio/ phono outs... obviously a decent sony/panasonic/etc still do.
agreed though you can pick up a scart to phono lead for £2-3 if it was needed.

Ok, just checked Toshibe web site and it does have Audio out. See here (http://www.home-entertainment.toshiba.co.uk/consumer/home.nsf) and click on connections. Also radform, this will act as the picture you need to see what Phono's look like!

thanks kryten, in the midst of being stuck in bed with bad flu, I missed the initial mention of Toshiba. doh!
should be really easy then.. a standard phono lead to a cheap set of PC speakers.. anything from £5 upwards.

Your VCR has a pair of phono output sockets for stereo audio, so a set of active, or powered, computer speakers would be a great and easy-to-use solution. A good range can be had from Maplin, Dabs or Freeola. Many of the cheaper ones, however, had a tethered input lead terminated in a 3.5mm jack plug, which won't go into your VCR. You therefore need to find a set with either phono sockets (meaning you'd need to get a phono-to-phono audio lead) or a 3.5mm input socket (needing a phono-to-3.5mm jack cable). Either these suppliers could also supply the necessary cable, but you will probably have to phone them to find out what the connectors used on any particular product are.
Maplin (http://www.maplin.co.uk/) (consider their Rollmaster LS500 Active Speakers (http://www.maplin.co.uk/products/module.asp?CartID=030104144831661&moduleno=27962&modulecode=))
Dabs (http://www.dabs.com) (Altec Lansing (http://www.dabs.com/products/product-locator.asp?lstep=3&c_id=9&t_id=789) is a good make)
