Component Video cables
Question:

Hi,
A HC newbie here :)
Are component cables just phono cables?
I have a Tosh. 36ZT29B and a Tosh. 220E, both of them have component video connections, so I was wondering if I could use this cable, or is this cable just for audio?
http://www.grandata.co.uk/acatalog/Grandata__3_Phono_to_3_Phono_688.html
Its a 3 phono to 3 phono cable made by Thor.
So is this cable specifically for component or is it just a composite audio+video cable?
Thanks.

Answers:

component cables should all be 75 ohms, those cables just look like a composite video with stereo sound.
try looking up www.keene.co.uk they do leads and will make up what ever you require !!!
i know ixos also do component leads but a faily expensive

It's a 75ohm fully screened quality cable.
It works fine for video and for the price it's a great buy.

So you're saying its perfectly fine for component cable, i.e. all 3 leads are meant for video?
I know the cable is 75 Ohm and it has high density OFC, so that should be ok right, as thor is a good company?

Answers:

Sounds like they should be fine mate.

They are just standard cables. I have some "dedicated" component cables for one DVD player and just normal ones for the other and there is very little noticable difference really.

Ok, so which should I buy:
Thor cables which have a decent reputation, which don't say anything specifically about component video, (but seem up to spec.) :

OR

http://custom1.farnell.com/cpc/prod...%5Fid=AV0439866
These are cables that aren't branded, but are up to spec. and say they are specifically for component video. Also, why should 1 be more expensive than the other, they seem identical?
Thanks a lot.

The ones that you have linked to on the grandata site seem to be standard phonos, ie not the 75ohm cables that you need/are best for component.

You can get the Supra AV3 components for £52 at www.supradirect.com
They are still quite pricey though i suppose.

On the Thor Website it says this about the phono cables:
"This low capacitance design ensures accurate 75 ohm impedance"
"Conductive PVC bonded between a high density OFC braided shield clears up EMI"
So basically it has the same spec as a normal component video cable?
I'm really lost now, I haven't really got money to buy outrageous cables, and I don't particularly want "no-make" cables!

Answers:

Well it looks like they are proper 75 ohm cables, so I'd say buy them.

cheng - are you basing your information on http://www.thoravinterconnects.co.uk/products/phono.html ?
I agree its not clear...
they list 75 ohm in the spec but never mention component video.
£16.50 for a 3m cable is very cheap though.
it will work... though there could be problems but worth a risk at this price.

yes, I've emailed maplin and grandata so I should get an answer soon :)
But inc. VAT its £20 for the 3m cable, good price but not something I'd like to blow...

Answers:

the maplin one gives you a bit of hope since it actually mentions video specifically, though not the 75ohm but it does skirt related issues.
