Question:
I am now looking at buying either a Toshiba 220e or PioneerDV454s player and want multi region and RCE compatibility. I found the best price for the pioneer on askdirect's website. However they have stated they want £50 to make it RCE compatible. Is this a load of bull, as from comments on this site I had assumed it was RCE compatible straight out of the box? Also would the Toshiba also need modification or will it also be RCE compatible out of the box?
Also can you clear up some of the model numbers mystery for me regarding the pioneer. I have seen it listed as DV454, DV454s and DV454k with varying prices. Are they the same model, or not, and if not which is the better one?
Thanks Mim
I tried two players that I got recently with xXx (RCE region 1)
The Pioneer DV-454S (silver) from Askdirect plays the disc
The Toshiba SD-220e from RGB plays the disc (I assume it will be the same from Richer Sounds and Amazon)
The different model numbers for the Pioneer refer to the colour s- silver & k - black
I didn't think any of the Pioneers were region free or RCE friendly 'out of the box'.
The software is straight from Pioneer - to be honest £50 to have it region free is about £50 too much. Cant you try a local independent hi-fi store that wont charge you for it (IE Sevenoaks etc.)
The Pioneer from Ask Direct is multi-region and RCE compatible out of the box. I got mine for £121. They had written MR in marker along the side of the box.

Pioneers wouldn't have supplied it in that way - they are breaking the law. Ask Direct would have updated the firmware with the update cd.
miriamporter if you find a Pioneer model you want to buy I will see if I can get you the software and mail a disc to you!
I am not suggesting they did not use the CD. I was merely stating a fact that the Pioneer I bought 2 weeks ago from Ask Direct was Multi-region and can play RCE discs. The price was £121
