Question:
"2.35:1 Aspect Ratio Film will always have black bars top and bottom even if its Anamorphic"
Is this statement true as a m8 of mine says LOTR fills the whole of his new Tosh 50" RPTV.Before on his 32" tube tv he said he got very small black bars top and bottom. He said about a thumb nail wide.
On my 41" Sony RPTV i get about a 2" bar top and bottom.
I always thought anamorphic 2.35 films give black bars top and bottom.
Sorry if this is a crazy question but until i see my m8 tv is bothering me that im doing somthing wrong.
btw hes not zooming in on it and says all of his disc now have full screen with no bars
Impossible, unless he is stretching the picture or zooming in.
Widescreen TVs have a 16:9 (1.78) aspect ratio. Therefore, a 2.35:1 (21:9) film MUST have black bars at the top and bottom to preserve the correct format.
If you friend has a 2.35:1 film filling his W/S TV then it must be either stretched so that people look a little taller than they should, or he is zooming into the picture, chopping off some of the information at the sides.

Well thats what i thought. When i go round i will check it all out.

Whether or not it is anamorphic makes no difference to the shape of the picture, provided it is displayed properly (ie the TV etc is set to the correct setting).
2.35:1 is WIDER than a widescreen TV. So, it must either:
a) have black padding above and below OR
b) have the extreme left and right sides of the image hidden/cropped (in which case it might fill the screen) OR
c) be enlarged vertically (but not horizontally) (in which case it might fill the screen - but the picture contents will be disproportionately tall).
