Buying multiregion
Question:

Comet and such like only sell r2 players. The assistant said that is all they are allowed to do. So presumably we have to go to other outlets (eg Richer Sounds) for multis?
Is the Toshiba 220 any good?

Answers:

Yeah how come Richersounds get away with it?

Your best option is to visit online retailers like http://www.homecinemaheaven.com/ as they'll generally be better priced than highstreet stores and are more likely to know their stuff too.

I don't think there's a law against selling multiregion DVD players in shops. Most likely Comet don't want to **** off the major hardware manufacturers who might stop supplying them.

I would avoid Techtronics if I were you. If something goes wrong then by most accounts their customer service is atrocious. Do a search for them in the Suppliers forum and you'll get lots of threads about this company. :|

Thanks for the info. I'm on the case right now ...

I recommend Richersounds, top notch customer service, not the patronising crap from certain high street retailers (the ones that charge silly money for crappy warranties).

I noticed my local Sony center was advertising players as multi region so perhaps High street stores are wising up...

Comet are talking *********. There is no law against it, it's just Holywood gets ******* off if manufacturers make multiregion players.

Isn't there some licensing law like for a DVD player to display the DVD logo on the chassis it must incorporate region protection?

Answers:

And assistants in Comet/Currys/Dixons are famous for their expert knowledge;) (Yes - some are very good but many are terrible). There is nothing illegal about selling multiregion players whatsoever. When I hear advise given like this one from Comet I can't help thinking that the assistants are making it up as they go along. (My personal favourite quote is last year when a bloke at Currys told me that Sony make tubes for Phillips TV's. Hmmmm)
