There's a handset hack to make the machine multi-region (based on the Philips 750 hack if I remember correctly). Got the 880 myself, and didn't see much use for the 6 hour recording mode (no better than VHS), and the Firewire port doesn't interest me either as I'd prefer to edit the footage on my PC first rather than stick it on a DVD straight off, with no editing.

Yes.. but once the editing is done on the PC the firewire port is invaluable to encoding to to mpeg2 format, and will give better results than outputting via S/vid -- Or software encoding with the PC using whichever software decoder

Phillips 890 DVD Recorder.
Having looked at these Set top DVD recorders can anybody tell me, When you write a DVD+R disc, Will it then play on most Stand alone DVD players ie Pioneer, Sony, LG. I have heard rumors that if its written with the Phillips DVD+ format it will only play back on the same recorder "Phillips" Personally I cannot see this being true but at over £400 to buy they ought to play on anything..
Any feedback will be appreciated..:)

According to every report I have read about the Philips it will playback on all but the very oldest of DVD players, but you must close the disc, which is no different from writing most types of disc
(THE PHILIPS WILL PLAY BACK ITS OWN DISCS WITHOUT CLOSING) meaning if you tape a tv program and the disc is not full ... you can fill it with the next program
what it does struggle with - is playing back in a lot of DV Roms but that is a problem that is overcome easily
16x Lite-on DV Rom for about £30 if my current bunch of roms and readers wont read it
the biggest drawback with all Set top dvd recorders is that none of them will record 5.1 surround. but that is not what I want one for any way
the recording quailty of these things is fantastic and you will have a tough time telling it from the Live footage, and does away with the need for crappy VHS recorders, plus they have most of the features of a VCR

This magazine has a full review of it giving it a whopping 95% rating
here's a little bit of what they say on the front page

to read the rest you would obviously have to buy it, but it gives a glowing report.
