Question:
While I wait for delivery of my Prog Scan tv, I thought I would look into getting a dvd player capable of using the tv's full potential.
Should I stick with brand names or are the quality of say "shinco" players or other low brand makes pretty good?
Any help appreciated.
Baz
If you can find one ,Philips 963 ,PAL and NTSC progressive scan.
Toshiba SD510E
DENON DVD A1
Sony are bringing out a new one (DVP-NS999 ES) that does PAL and NTSC progressive, it also has a 14bit video dac.

Baz, will your TV accept progressive scan input? Not many TVs do, it's usually just plasma and projectors.
Cheapest PAL & NTSC player is the Philips 963, after that, it's the Arcam DV88+
there are a few more ps-capable TVs than there used to be.. Tosh and Panasonic now have a number for starters.
the harman kardon dvd 25 does both pal & ntsc ps and is pretty cheap also.. £300 or less. some sites had it for £275 recently.
I'm after a Philips 963 myself but it is in very short supply at the moment... though it should be one of the best based on the chipset and way cheaper than the Arcam and the Denons.

Top quality at a great price :)
I have a Toshiba SD900 which is a wonderful machine. But you can probably get something nearly as good for a lot less money.

Cheers for all the help and links. I'm getting a Tosh 32ZD26 which has progressive scan, I think?
think there is a v good DENON Machine out there. maybe someone can confirm the model number?

I have already mentioned it:
Denon DVD A1
definitely not the Denon 2800 mkII I hope,
I've already had the original 2800 and mkII and returned both because of the bad mpeg artifacts.
It should be a good player but isn't reliable enough, plus Denon haven't been responsive on faults.. mostly they just ignore them on the 2800s.
the Denon 3800 (which adds dvd-audio and some improved chips) originally had these problems but may have fixed them in later batches according to reports. certainly more regular firmware updates on the 3800 and it has had a fix for the chroma bug unlike the 2800 models.
the A1 is a little expensive. nice though.
That Toshiba tv does progressive scan in NTSC only.
thought i`d mention this, as i`ve been looking into gettting one for 6 months :)
Spoony.
Are there any TV that can do progressive PAL ? (I know Toshiba one does NTSC)
(I am interested in Sony / Panasonic / Toshiba or Philips)
Also do I need Progressive Scan DVD Player to link up Progressive Scan TV for progressive scan display ?
I will get one eventually, but no pay check
:brickwall
Tag DVD32 a snip at £4K, failing that the Arcam mentioned above
Cheers for letting me know Spoony. Progressive Scan in NTSC will have to do for now then, I can live without PAL progressive scan. Most of my discs are R1 at the moment.

Same here m8, Pal discs are awful <speed up> and other things.
Could you lend me £850 so i can get the same tv as you m8? :)
Thatsa the cheapest i`ve found it with delivery. :(
Spoony.
£850 it was for me as well. Its coming from Robertsons, I was gonna try and get it from John Lewis who are doing it for the same price (as discussed in the Bargain Forum), but my branch didnt have any in stock.
Baz
i've got the 3800 denon
lovely player,
got all the latest upgrades (multi-region, chroma bug fix, Pal & NTSC Progressive)
works fine - superb picture on my Panny 42 plasma.
Have had a few discs suffer from the dreaded freezing/lock-up problem,
but not for a while.
See AVforums for more on this player:clap:
