Question:
Hope this is in the right place, I guess it could go in the general or the music forum these days. Ho hum...
Anyhoo, does anyone know of a good set of headphones with low audio leakage? I've just got an iPod, and I want to ditch the stock headphones and get some decent ones, but the missus doesn't want to have to listen to "tsst tsst tsst...tsst tsst tsst..." all the time.
Having done a search, it would appear the BeyerDynamic DT231's and the Sennheiser HD580's are the most highly regarded on the forums, but how do they sound to other people?
Cheers all, and merry christmas!
Well you'll need closed back cans, which the Senn 580s certainly arent.. they sound fantastic, but they leak tons...
The BeyerDynamic DT231 Galactic's get my vote  Easily the best closed style headphones in their price range (around £38 -> £45 in most places).
Baps, (or anyone else with the qualifications to answer the question ;) ) do the Senn 580's sound sufficiently superior to the BeyerDynamic for me to ignore the sound leakage issue? I can always just listen to them in a quiet room or something if they sound that good.
Also, I'm likey to use them at work (intending to take the iPod with me, rather than have to listen to cd's off my work PC) so if the Sens "leak tons" are they going to annoy colleagues?
Thanks for the quick responses guys
Just one more thing : Having looked up the price difference, its quite considerable. Now, I was prepared to pay that much for the headphones, but paying £80-off for a set of 'phones to listen to mp3's (which are likely to play at 128k or 192k encoding) doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. Agree?
I've had a pair of Beyerdynamic DT231 Galactic headphones for a year and I think they're terrific - and great value.
However, I don't regard them as closed back. They look a bit like closed back headphones but the earpieces are smaller and sit on the ears rather than around them. They definitely allow sound in (e.g. if Mrs friedeggbutty is watching TV loudly in the same room) and I think she would confirm they let sound out.
I don't they are marketed as being closed back either.
I still think they're great though. Sound very good, plenty of bass, very comfortable to wear and don't feel at all claustrophobic (which true closed back headphones can do after a while). If I recall correctly they also had a 5 star review in What Hi fi.
The HD580's are great cans but aren't the most efficient when used with a portable....DT231's are good but have a bloody long cable - a pain if you're using them on the move.
I'd suggest the Sennheiser PX200's - very new, folding, wonderful sound and worth every penny of the £40 they cost. They are also extremely leak-free and will block out a lot of external noise.
Cheers, I've gone for a set of PX200's from EmpireDirect. They were slightly less than £40 including delivery.
Might upgrade to the 580's once I've got a decent sound system at home...
Cheers all.
Bit late now but I love the sony fontopias MDR-EX70, nothing else will fit in my weird ears but they do sound great

How long did it take for the earphones to come? Any problem with customs?
I had a pair of EX70's and though they were dreadful - all bass and no midrange at all.
For in-ears the Sennheiser MX500's slaughtered them.
I'm hoping mine will arrive tomorrow...
I used a mates set of EX70's, but wasn't overly impressed with them. I'm looking forward to trying out the PX200's.
Anyone know if these will need "breaking in" as I've read with the more expensive sets?
My PX200's sounded pretty good straight out of the box
I have a pair of sennheiser HD25 sps that i have been using for about 3 years and can thoroughly recommend them, originally designed for professional dj use they are light, flexible, look good, are virtually indestructable and also sound as good as the audiophile 580s etc.
Sound leakage/intrusion is not a factor with these 'phones as they are completely closed, as any aspiring dj would tell you.
Frequency response and sensitivity are also more than suitable for mp3 usage.
Mine cost £85 but i'm sure they could be bought for less nowadays.
Cheers, Brock.

They do get very mixed reviews, I have to say. I think they might need a decent sound source - people say dreadful things about them, but I can't hear it myself, they sound good to me. Got some £200 sennheisers reduced via the baragain forum awhile back, and while they aren't exactly in the same league, they aren't too far off...
Well, the PX200's arrived this morning and I'm impressed.
Very stylish and handy case for them, and they're suprisingly sturdy for a foldaway set. From what I can tell from the quick listen I've had so far, they sound good too.
Haven't been able to find out about the audio leakage yet, because the Mrs is at work. The cat doesn't seem to be complaining though...
