DVD R - worth it yet or not?
Question:

My video is kicking up it's heels. Already have mr dvd player. Given that the Philips 880?/809? are retailing at about £400 now, is it worht getting one, or just get a vid and wait another year 18 months?

Answers:

Neither - get a TiVo :D
(if you can find one of course!)

Answers:

So what would be best, TIVO or SkyPlus?

Answers:

I've got a Philips 880, Sky+ and a TiVo. Use the Philips mainly for recording NTSC progs off satellite at the moment, but once I've got everything wired up properly, will be dumping some documentary material and lesser known movies onto DVD+R blanks for future viewing/reference. I like having all three at my disposal. Will make deciding what to tape whilst on holiday a much easier exercise next year. :)

kirok1,
Some people swear by TiVo, others by Sky+.
The picture quality from Sky+ will certainly be better since it simply dumps the MPEG stream directly to disc - there is no re-encoding stage as far as I know. The TiVo interface is supposedly much better and less prone to crashes from what I've heard.
Personally, I don't intend getting Sky in the near future, so Sky+ is not an option. TiVo provides the most flexibility. Currently I have a Freeview box hooked up to my TiVo, and am planning on getting the lifetime sub. No additional expenses. Provided TiVo stay in business, that is...
That bein said, Pace and Nokia have/are releasing their own PVRs which are not TiVo-based but do include integrated DVB tuners. Might be worth waiting to see how those pan out.
