Buying a new TV..tomorrow! Advice requested..
Question:

Hi, I am after a new TV but it has to be from Comet as I am using £600 of vouchers which I got through my extended warranty after my TV broke down.
I am considering the Sony KV32FX66 and the JVC AV-32R250EKS. But I have been told by a friend who was also after a KV32FX66 that he saw it in a store and the glass panel was knackered, and the price was only £788. The assistant told him thats how he would recieve the TV, and that Sony has discontinued the TV (although I have since been told this is BS) because of the glass panel and it's liability to breaking. Is the TV worth buying at this price, even with a knackered glass panel? I was looking at it and it seems there would be two pieces of metal sticking out if I took the panel off... has anybody else experienced problems with the panel? There's a possiblity I have gotten this TV mixed up with another, but does any other Sony have the distintive glass panel? I noticed the info said 'designer'
I have also considered a rear projection TV such as the Toshiba 42PW23P, but from what I have seen of Rear-pro TVs in the past, the picture isn't too good, and it's very dark when the sunlight is shining on it? Is this the case these days? Does the picture match a flatscreen 'glass' TV?
Also, if I found the TV I want cheaper online would Comet price match?
Thanks for any advice, I need to act quickly as the expiry is looming and I need to buy it tomorrow evening!:rocker: rock on folks..

Do you have a Barclaycard? They will pricematch up to 60 days after you buy something if you spot it elsewhere cheaper.

That's a good idea, yes I do - thanks. Will Barclaycard price match even if I find the price cheaper on some website found via Google?

8-],have you mangaged to do this successfully? I'm just about to buy a nice 36" Widescreen TV,I'd rather use my local independent retailer,I'd be likely to save @ £4 - 500 if I bought it online, but I'd much rather buy it locally.

I've only done it with a set of headphones. I bought them for £80 from Richer Sounds and then found them for £60 at the Empire Direct website.
They asked for the website info - I posted them the relevant screenshots and they refunded the amount.
I've just had a look at http://www.barclaycard.co.uk/Card_Benefits/Price_Promise/ and it says that the exclusions are:
Any single item where the purchase price is less than £50
Any items for which a claim has been made or could be made using the retailer's own lowest price guarantee or other agreement
Items for which the discounted price was not available to the general public
Money, tickets of any kind and holidays
Goods not bearing the name/brand of the retailer or manufacturer or any other unbranded goods
Motorised vehicles or parts or accessories for them
Living creatures or plants
Buildings and other structures, other than garden sheds or greenhouses
Second hand goods
Goods purchased or available at auctions or business winding up sales
Any part of an agreement for the provision of services
Any item that is offered either free or reduced if another item is purchased)
Items purchased from any market trader
Items purchased from or through the business of any cardholder
Items purchased for any trade or business purpose
All purchases made outside the United Kingdom
Where branded goods have been or could have been purchased for less from a retailer in the United Kingdom trading through the Internet, the purchase price shall always include the full cost of distribution, including delivery, packing and postage.
So - it still sounds like internet prices are valid (as long as you take into account P&P). In my case I proved to them that Empire Direct also had a store and so I could have bought it in person and not paid the P&P so I got the full amount back.
Best to give them a call on 0800 3166 090 to confirm before you buy.
Also if I were you I'd consider getting it from John Lewis (as they throw in a 5 year warranty as standard on TVs) and then getting Barclaycard to price-match with an internet site to get the difference back. That way you get the best price on the TV and get a 5 year warranty as standard.

I am now considering either the Sony KV-32LS60, or Thomson 32WF401G or Thomson 32WX411T (yet I can't see a difference between these two) or possibly the PHILIPS 32PW8717, as I think my friend got the glass panel tv price mixed up as apparently the designer one is different to the one I specified in the original post. Any advice anyone? I need to buy it later on

I have it's predecessor (the FX65) and am very pleased with it.

I just got my tosh 32zd26. It's absolutely fantastic. Only got it hooked up to a Limit DVD player which I have "borrowed" from Richer Sounds until my player from China gets back with PAL/NTSC prog scan but can't fault the tv at all (but I wish I could fit my THX amp into the stand-not deep enough! :-( ). Sharpest picture I've seen, colours are amazing with Moulin Rouge. :rocker:

Hi Phil Tucker, I checked out your site and that is a very veryu good deal indeed, if I didn't have the Comet warranty vouchers I would've purchased the TV from your site - that deal is unbeatable in my view.
I ended up buying the Sony KV-32LS60 in the end, as it looked like a good TV to me, and the FX66 was just out of my price range, because I also wanted a 5-year extended warranty. Interestingly the Comet sales rep knocked us £100 off the warrany without me even asking (although I did comment that it was pricey and I probably wouldn't buy it at that price) bringing it to a very reasonable £154 and it covers accidental damage too.
The guy at Comet also told us that the KV-32LS60 is basically the same as the FX66 except for the FX66 has a few more features and is aesthically different. Does the KV-32LS60 compare to the FX66?

Comet will tell you anything to sell you an extended warranty !
The 32LS60 seems to have MORE features than my 32FX65 ie Virtual Dolby (useless) and 2 RGB SCARTS.

I have owned the KV-32LS60 for over 6 weeks now and although I probably paid over the odds for it (don't have to pay anything for a year though) I find it an absolutely wonderful TV, leaving comparable Panasonics and Philips in the ha'penny place.

Good to hear that culabula, mind if I ask how much you paid for it? Mine is coming tomorrow, getting excited now lol

I think I paid 1035 sterling; I saw it cheaper in loads of other places since -even in € in Dublin - but I don't really care all that much since I have until the 01/11/03 to pay for it :-) I have it coupled with a 60GBP Nokia Mediamaster -the digital TV picture is simply stunning as is the picture from a cheap Dansai 852 DVD player. I also run my Sony Vaio into it and stream French TV into it over the web -more than acceptable @ 10€ a month :-). A fabulous, remarkable TV -I've seen the two brands that my mates own and it's superb and outclasses their (top-of-the-range) sets (to their extreme jealousy and deflated egos).
Furthermore I was thrilled that my set was destined for the Irish market even though I got it in Belfast which means that I can use it anywhere on either UHF or VHF (Irish cable still being largely VHF).
I've just seen it in another shop here though @895GBP with free Sony DVD and VHS plus year to pay. The word 'arse' springs to mind.

Great :D I did notice in store that the picture looked better than anything around it, they had the Ice Age DVD on. I also have the Dansai 852 DVD Player so good to hear it looks good on the TV! Do you use scart leads in RGB mode? I think I'd better get some decent scarts I have some cheap ones from Index at the moment!

Answers:

Dansai looks fabulous; a year on since purchase in in Tesco and it's still performing excellently, never a day's trouble. I splashed out and got a 20GBP gold plated decent scart for it Vivanco). If you can get one of the refurbished Mediamasters @60GBP you'll be laughing. The picture is just astonishing especially since Freeview doubled the power, I can't watch ordinary TV any more. At the price you got it for it is a fantastic bargain.

Answers:

culabula, have you seen any football matches on your set?
I've heard that on 100hz sets the pitch can look a bit crap in the panning shots.
I don't want to compromise on the quality of football matches and would rather get a 50hz if it meant a better pic.
I'd only be watching stuff off DVD, Sky or TiVo.
ta :)

Sorry for delay in replying -have been away making a survivor-style 'reality TV show'.
Anyway, not a football fan so can't really answer that question, I'm afraid.
Just got the Nokia 221t Mediamaster to route into the Sony and all is looking pretty cool.
