6 channel sound
Question:

I'm fairly new to all this so appologies for the ignorant question.
I have a Limit home cinema system which has the amp built into the sub, a centre speaker and 4 surround speakers, the amp has 3 sound modes, 2.1 which distributes the sound from my normal TV, SKY and VCR out of the centre and front speakers in stereo I've sussed that. 5.1 which distributes the sound from my dvd player in full surround sound sussed that too and 6 channel. There is no explanation in the manual regarding 6 channel what is it and what benefits are there with it if any:confused:

Answers:

a lot of people and books class 5.1 as 6channel sound because it has front l and r, rear left and right, centre and sub so 6chanels. I believe that top systems also have a rear centre but i dont know what that is classed as

it can get confusing, as dapex said about 6 ch being 5.1 surround in alot of contents.... all i know is there is 5.1 and 6.1 surround.
i have 6.1 surround , which is exactly the same as 5.1 but you have rear centre as well , , firstly you need an AV amp to handle this , then obviously the rear centre, 6.1 is also reffered to as DTS ES matrix/discreet........
all common dvds up to DTS will play on 5.1 but if you are lucky enough to find DTS ES discs then 6.1 is for you .,
i could go on all day but if you wanna know more you can email

dnw are you talking about 6.1 sound or 6 channel analouge sound? As my manuel didn't go into bugger all detail about it either, all it said was that there were connection there for it if I wanted to enjoy 6 channel sound.
From the manuel of my DVD player (Pioneer 656) it states that if I want to play SACD or DVD Audio I need to connect the via the analogue ports. If anyone knows anything more on this it would be much appreciated.

some thing has got very confused here! The sound has to end up as analog sound waves, ie the end result that go down the wires to the speakers is analog.
To save space on dvd's Dolby and DTS compressed the analog waves into digital representations of it.
To play this back you need to undo this, ie convert the digital into analog.
Now your dvd player can send sound as a digital signal (the dvd player does nothing to it apart from read it from the disc) down either the digital coax or the optical cables (no difference). Or the dvd player can decode the digital signal its self and send it to the amp using the analog cables (the RCA ones).
Ok so far:)
Channels, 5.1,6, 2, 7 whatever don't tell you if its digital or analog it just tells you how many independant sources of sound there are. 5.1=6 channels, the .1 is the sub channel and is relegated from being a full channel probly because its frequency range is reduced. eg if you just connected the sub you wouldn't understand the movie, but if you didn't connect the sub you would...get it? so the sub only enforces the sound.
Dolby Digital and DTS are two different formats of digital compression. Dolby Digital is more common as its the defualt for the DVD standard (so 1 ch mono movies are still dolby digital).
It gets difficult now, DD and DTS both introduced systems with more than the 5.1 channels. DTS added a centre rear channel which is their 6.1 channel DTS-ES. DD added information about a centre rear to the 2 surround channels! which is their 5.1 DD-EX, its 5.1 because this rear centre isn't discreet its part of the two rear channels and the decoding chip/software 'matrixes' it out (matrix because of the math used not the film:))
Dolby Prologic is like the DD-EX, there are only 2 channels but there is a 3rd channel which is the surround, (so when in prologic both of your rear speakers should be outputting the same thing), ProLogic 2 is still 2 channels but the there is now 2 rear channels matrixed in.
I'm not sure if Dolby have a true 6.1 system, or exactly what the Neo is, I think its the DTS equiv of pro logic. Oh and the SDDS seen in the credits is an 8? channel system from sony that doesn't seem to be heading for home hi fi.
So when your amp talks about 6ch it means you can connect already decoded sound from the 6ch output on your source (dvd, sacd or dvda player) to the amp, this is purely for future proofing, so you can use the latest technology and still use your amp to amplify.
As for the 656a q, I've just got this player and are trying to work out the same thing. You need the analog stereo connection because the powers that be decided that you can't transmit this super hi def audio through the digital ports (easyier to copy or sommit) so it has to go through the analog ones! What I can't do is get the amp to use it right!
