Question:
What, and where, is the current best DVD player around the £50–100 mark?
Preferably multiregion; won't matter about having potential to hook up with surround sound system.
Thanks in advance

Panasonic......Toshiba.........Pioneer ;)
if your gonna spend £100, you may as well spend an extra £20 and get a top brand.
People used to fall over themselves to offer their best spots for DVD player bargains....
No offence but listing brand names is not really helping me that much. I have a DVD player that I am very happy with, which was recommended in here a year ago and was from Tescos. I was hoping for similar advice to purchase a gift.
Any further advance on 'three words'?
a recent test whathifi i think) of about 5 up to £100 concluded that the £100 one was the best (think it was bush).
taking that into account, for £15 more you can have the toshiba sd220e from amazon (free delivery over £100 at the mo?) for £115,multiregion.
and its doubtful that you would want to replace it in a month, unlike some of the cheaper ones.

That's what I'm talking about. Thank you Davey.
I have also discovered from another site (well you drove me to it!)
that WHSmith does a Cyberhome 402, which is apparently very good and costs £80 and also plays VCDs and MP3s.
Lots of info and a variety of players here: &threadid=133564
Ive just got a Apex AD2100 from Safeway tonight for £59.99 plays >

Amazon have the multiregion Toshiba 120 at £99 .
Unbeatable for a quality multiregion player if you don't need MP3 or VCD/SVCD playback.
You get 3 DVDs free (from a choice of 7) by redemption too !
Better picture and build quality than the cheapies.
P.S deanos.. there isn't a multiregion hack or firmware update available for that Apex.
Or has one come to light ? !!!

Pioneer will play most things thrown at it, its basically up to you, it's your cash, I am just listing out the 3 players which usually get 4 and 5 stars, if you want a 1-3 star player, that's your choice.
Some of the above are available at amazon.co.uk, and you can always get reviews on google.
a mate has a cyber home - had it for 3 months and just got the tosh from amazon - the cyber home was not very good with r1 films - they "jumped" a lot supposedly. it doesnt happen with the tosh.

The Pioneer 350 wont play DVDR/RW burnt in Nero for some reason, just thought i would mention it
Works fine with DVDR/RW burnt using other progs so maybe experimenting with NERO would be best as just burning a couple of items doesn't necessarily mean than the player doesn't like a certain piece of software. :)
get the apex from safeway, the yanks love this brand, gonna pick one up cos me mate gets 10% at safeway so will cost me £54 :D its for the gf anyways so i dont care :D

Just to let you know it says Naki on the box but its the same player
I haven't tried one out myself, but the Dansai from Tesco gets quite a good write up for a budget player. it's hackable and £69.00.
I would personally agree with other posters - you can get a top name player for not a lot extra - but the choice is yours:)
Are Tescos still selling the DANSAI players anywhere though...?
Swindon superstore still has some. ;)
The Tescos in my area only recently got stock of both the Dansai 1010 and the Dansai 952.
You get good back up with the Dansai players. They have a dedicated telephone helpline (they will send a free disc to enable VCD/SVCD playback if its disabled on your Dansai 1010). Plus Tesco have a decent return policy unlike many online retailers.
I'm still happy with my Dansai 852 , it seems to play any format without problems or fiddly keypresses. Mines played region 1 DVDs,Region 2 DVDs, movie DVD-R, multi movie DVD-R, VCD,SVCD ,MP3 all without problems :) Its a pity it does not send the widescreen switching signal for anamorphic DVDs , and it needs setting to RGB every time you switch on for the best picture quality (one day i'll get around to buying a S-Video to scart cable to avoid this hassle)
BEST BUDGET DVD PLAYER....
i brought a H&B from amazon.co.uk after reading the customer reviews and i must say that its without a doubt the best player i've used
and i've used alot including some £250+ players
This player does the lot and is multiregion out of the box.
Only think ... one of my older dvd players which as a ACOUSTIC SOLUTIONS had this clever little thing in which u could put in a normal data CD into the drive and if it contained a VCD FORMATTED MPEG file (doesnt need to be a DAT or properly formated VCD disc with all the folders etc) it would play the file like normal?!?! (only think missing what a option to play straight AVI - ....)
ANYWAY GO WITH THE H&B
If u do have to go with a top brand then dont GO WITH A SONY!!
They may look good and play OKAY but they are not very versatile at all!! most wont play anything special without being modified or something.
Apparently the Naki (Apex) from Safeway IS multiregion
Player is "REGION FREE" !!!!
Tried region 1,2 and 4 DVDs no problems at all. It plays everything smoother and clearer than my old Cyberhome AD-L528
From a thread on nerd-out.
Thanks guys and gals. I'm sure this post is helping a lot of other people out there as we fast approach Christmas.
