Question:
i bought my cam on ebay in the summer, from a shop not from a s/h seller, and it arrived all sealed and brand new
on use of the second tape (5 were included), on playback the screen would pixellate a lot at it would advise me to clean the heads. i presumed it was a problem with the tape, as the camera was brand new so i kinda ignored it.
i used up all my tapes, and now quite frequently on playback the screen went funny, and the only way to fix the problem was to rewind it fully when around 30mins in and use the camera straight away. leaving it for a long period of time would mean the problem still occuring.
last week i was filming, and the CLEAN HEADS error came up whilst recording for the first time, so i eventually hunted down a head cleaner (£20 bleh!) ran it 3 times, and the picture seemed a bit better, and i watched the tape i'd recorded the other day a few times.
i wake up this morning, and yep as before pixellated screen and CLEAN HEADS warning until i rewound it from ~30mins in and started playing it. is there something more wrong with my camera than i previously thought, or is it cos im using these older tapes? should i dump everything off my old tapes, run the head cleaner a few times then only use brand news ones? any suggestions?
If it's from a shop I'd return it - the heads are clearly not right.
You could try new tapes first, but it doesn't sound right to me....
Return it.
I have had a Sony PC100 for 2+ years and have never had this once. A friend with a Panasonic EX3 see this often. Some brands could be more prone than others.
What type is it?

I've had my PC100 for 3 years now and it still records perfectly.
Mind you, it's starting to make a bit more noise than it used to.....
any idea if you can get these things serviced anywhere ? It could probably do with a bit of lube in the tape mechanism, but I dare not attempt myself....
its a JVC DVL-357EK
annoying it has to be returned then, i always put it down to a funny batch of tapes.. im concerned it might not have been new (altho the packing is contrary to this, as everything was sealed and complete) as the A/V socket is a bit "funny" and knocking the lead during playback causes problems on screen too
looks like i'll be ringing em up then :( better edit all my footage first cos i probably wont see a new one/fixed one for a while :(
