Question:
Following up on thread I posted a while ago and to warn people.
(Apologies if this is long winded)
Just to warn everybody about Pioneer players and the above in particular. If you have got an extended warranty on these, you may want to you renew them when they come up
Myself and friend of mine bought a pair of chipped 525's from Link
Electronics back in SEP 99. Great machine, very happy ith it, plays
everything thrown at it, (RCE, VCD's SUPER VCD's etc). So when my sister needed one a year later, I had no hesitation in recommending a Pioneer to her, and she bought a 535 from Home Cinema Choice.
Again , no problems, until now. Her player stopped playing DVD's but was fine with VCD's and CD's. Had it checked out, aparrantly the optical pickup is gone, and the cost of the part alone is over £100. And the players only 2 years old !
I thought this was a one off, but my friend phoned me up tonight and he's got the same problem !
I guess 3 years use is not bad, but still , we paid £200 each for
these. As luck would have it, I got it on a Barclaycard so got 2 Yrs
extra warranty with it which ran out in September. Didn't bother to renew as it was £100 for one year.
The repair guy said it was quite a common problem with players
generally, especially if they got a lot of use, the pick up tends to
go. Don't know wether this is true or not.
Anyway just to warn /pre-warn you all.
Waiting for mine to go now. :(
No comments yet I see.
Does this mean that no one else has had these problems with these players ? or any other make ? I hope so.
Or is it just a case of apathy in regards making a relavent comment :)
My sony 335 also had the laser pick-up go wonky, but that was within 1 year
And before anyone mentions it, i wasn't excessivly pausing the DVD's :norty:
How much to fix it?
(My 535 looks like it's gone the same way :( )

Bad news , I'm afraid Anorakus. :(
Pioneer were quoting about £140 + for the part alone.
The repair guy was pretty upfront about it. He said that Pioneer were putting stupid prices on laser assy's as they really wanted to you to go and buy another player.
Total repair cost was about £200 including fitting and VAT :(
He also said it was a common problem and 9 of 10 DVD players being brought to them with this problem were simply beyond economical repair.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news dude.
Had the same problem with a Panasonic player and was quoted £250 to fix it
This was 6 years ago however, was an R1 player I imported from the US.
Can happen with any player that gets a lot of use and as you've found out, given the cost of new player, not worth repairing.
On a related note, I see Richer sounds to an extended warranty starting at £20.00 for 3 years.
I don't know what ths covers, but they claim to give you your money back at the end of the warranty, if you don't claim.
Anybody got one, had to claim ?
What was the repair service like ?
If a manufacturer put stupid prices on parts to make you buy another player then wouldn't you buy a different make?
I would!
I've had a 525 since 99, no probs so far. If it breaks down, it just gives me an excuse to get a new player :)
Pioneer 535 - No problems to date [touch wood].
Had it about three years, but probably only use it about three times a week.

Sorry, should have said - I have a Sony DVP-535
Am I looking at around the same repair bill?
I have checked with a Sony Service Centre near me, and they charge £55 just to provide an estimate :shocker: (refundable if you go ahead)
UPDATE - just ordered a Pioneer 656A  I'm gonna put the Sony in for an estimate - if the cost of repair isn't too great, it will get a new lease of life as our bedroom player :smokin:

I'm on my 3rd laser assembly in my Panasonic A150. The 1st lasted 10 months, the 2nd a year, the 3rd one is coming up to 2 years old, and so far there have been no problems. Both assemblies were covered by Richer Sounds extended Warranty. The repairs were carried out within a week.
Sony 725, laser went within the first year.
Has started playing up again now but is getting long in the tooth (725's were only recently out when I got it) and gets used quite a lot each day.

I think you'll find that that any "official" centre for manufacturers will be pricey, and the service isn't necessarily any better than others. Try and find a reliable independant repairer, word-of-mouth reccomendations from friends etc are probably your best bet.
My local repairer only charges £10 for estimates (refundable if repared etc)
