Budget CD player/Amp/Speaker combination?
Question:

I know this forum is entitled "DVD and Home Cinema Hardware" but I hope you won't mind if I squeeze in a small audio hardware question ;)
I am replacing my ageing Technics "all in one" stereo system as it is starting to fail a little after 15 years stirling service.
I am thinking of going initially for an amp, a CD player and some speakers. Then adding a maybe a tuner, cassette player, turntable and mini disc seperates at a later date.
Looking though the Richer Sounds catalogue they seem to recommend as a good budget system:
Technics SLPG3 CD player £59.95
Cambridge Audio A1 amp £59.95
Mission 700 speakers £49.95 a pair
I play a wide variety of CD's (pop, rock, dance, top 40, indie etc)
The other consideration is that the CD player must have an optical digital out to record to my portable mini disc player.
Price obviously plays a part as well and for the 3 inital purchases (plus cables) I don't really want to go much above £200 if possible.
I do also have a slight bias towards Technics but only as my current system is Technics and has been so good for so long and am willing to be converted to the dark side.
I would greatly appreciate opinions, alternatives and advice.
Thanks in advance :)

The Missions are fine and will do the job well.
Leave the Cambridge Amp and get a Sony one if money is tight.
The Technics CD player is not a patch on even the most cheapest Sony say the CDPXE270.
If you are adverse to Sony then look at NAD or Marantz - but it will take you well over budget.
A Sony CD player coupled with a Sony Amp with the Missions will be sweet. Add qnect 1 or 2 cables plus cheapish speaker lengths and you'll be amazed at the sound.

Thanks for your reply Paul.
Why do you think the Technics player is not a patch on a Sony though? Build quality? Audio quality?
What Sony amp would you recommend instead of the Cambridge A1?
