Question:
Hi all,
I've been looking around this forum for quite a while, and am now considering to set up my own mini home cinema
Thing is, I want to to play my audio (cds, mp3s) as well as dvds and vcds. I've read that most dvd players and A/V amps are not that fantastic when just used to listen to music. Is that true?
I'd like to keep things a bit neat (i've already got an NTL STB, Tivo, VCR, 28" Panasonic TV), so was thinking a player and an amp would be just right (and speakers of course). Budget under 500 pounds if possible.
I was looking at the Pioneer HC51 (DV-454, VSX-C100, SV-40S) for 419.95 at UH.
Anyone think there's a better set up out there? Please let me know..

Still needs the speakers;) The HC51 (DV454) will outperform the DCS303 as its got a RGB scart option, the 303 is "only" composite or S-video. Plus the HC51 can be upgraded at a later stage if you want, by changing the speakers / sub or amp:)
Thanks for the reply Justin and highlander,
Just looking at the systems, HC51 and Sony S550 ( not looking at the HC550, cause I think justin, you said the DV550S was just a flashier looking model kinda)
Does the Sony being SACD compatible mean it has the potential to play better audio? And is it worth the extra 80quid?
Thanks again guys!!

The 550s more "style" orinated, the only real advantages are better dpeakers / sub and the jpeg viewer. The Sony, as its a "all in one" has advantages, and disadvantages. The main advantage is that its SACD ready, it also offers progressive scan via component (usless unless you have a projector, LCD or very recent large screen TV with this feature!), and is in a tidy box.
HOWEVER, the HC51 is based on a "real" DVD player, the Dv454, which will imediatley outperform the Sony, as it will allow RGB out via scart. Also, as the HC51 is made up of separates, there is nothing stopping you changing the receiver or speakers later on if you want to upgrade part or most of the system, the sony you are stuck with or flogging.
Heres some other options, depending on your budget - if you want SACD, buy a Sony DVP-NS705, then get the Pioneer Av51 (Same receiver and speakers as the HC51) - SACD separates system. Or change the DVD player to a panasonic DVDRA82 - DVD-Audio!
there are many different options, if you don`t want to go for a "package", but IMO the pioneers probably the safest bet as its as close as you`ll get to "real" components, with the flexability of changing bits of it later on as and when you decide / funds permit.
HTH?
Am really interested in the HC51 package though. Only thought about the SACD bit because I read in some magazine (not sure if it was Which Hi-Fi) that said that when playing CDs, in general, those SACD ready ones can give better performance. Is that actually true?
Another thing. On the upgrade heaven pages, the HC51 states that it comes with the SV40S speakers, but the AV51 says that it comes with SV50K speakers?
thanks justin for your advice! been reading around the forums for about a month, and I can tell you spends loads of your time here helping out!!

Lohwj,
RE SACD, I`ve got it on a 3 year old Sony DVPS9000ES, think have used it twice - IMO if you go for SACD, you might as well go for DVD-A as well, that way at least you`ve got both formats in one box, no kmatter which one "lives". Currently though only Pioneer and marantz have such "universal" models.
UH site has only just gone back "live" as its for the DVD forum offers only, the forums list was getting a bit long (you need to be a forums member to be able to order from that site) If you need specs on anything, just look at my "normal" site (HCH) as thats got all the correct info and specs (or pioneers site!).
The HC51 / Av51 come with the SV40S speaker pack, the HC550 comes with the SV50K pack.
hope that makes sense?!?
Consider the new Philips 963SA - I imported mine from Holland about 3 weeks ago, and its got great DACs for audio.
Does uosampled 192/24 bit CD playback, MP3's and SACD.
