Question:
A friend of mine is looking to buy a new dvd player. He's currently trying to choose between the Panasonic RA-82 and Pioneer 550? Does anyone have either of these? Are there any big differences (I know the RA82 has DVD-Audio) or is one vastly better than the other? They both seem to be around the 200 quid mark
Thanks for any help

Ok, a DV550 is just a Dv454 with the addition of a built in Jpeg viewer from CDR, and a half mirror box.
The RA82 is basically a 62 with DVD-Audio support. It all boils down to if your friend wants DVD-Audio or not, IMO i`d forget both and go for either the Pioneer DV454 or Pana RV62.
HTH?
Thanks Justin.
Probably a silly question, but what's a half mirror box?

the styling, half mirror, half silver:)
Thanks again Justin. Even more questions:
Does the 454 have the same additional audio processor as the 550?
In terms of video output, the Panasonic is quoted at lower signal-noise, but I don't know how objective these tests are, so I was hoping for someone had played with both to get me some feedback - also don't know about interlacing capabilities.
Finally, do you reckon the DVD-A capability is worth it? My mate doesn't really have that decent a set-up at the moment. Is the main DAC likely to be decent quality in the RA-82?
Thanks

There is no "additional" audio processor on the Dv550. Are you sure you are not thinking of the old DV545, which did have the legarto pro chipset for audio cd? The Dv550 is the same as the 454 other then the styling and jpeg viewer:)
As for DVD-Audio, thats really down to yourself, IMO I`d either wait, or buy a universal machine (currently only Pioneer & marantz make these) that offers both DVD-A and SACD. TBH, if you mate doesn`t really have much of a setup, then why not even consider the Dv350? All you`ll lose is a optical and some styling.
Just a though:)
Thanks for any help
