Question:
Well, got my Pioneer 350 from amazon today, and its v kool, multiregion and all working smoothly.
I'm prob not going to buy an amp immediately (don't have the spare cash), but can someone tell me some good (cheapesh, but still decent - i.e. similar to the Pioneer 350 a decent player and above the budget range) that would go well with this?
Also what sort of things should I look for in a half decent amp (might keep my eyes peeled for 2nd hand ones) and what level ratings in terms of the outputs are good?
Cheers

What about a nice Pioneer VSXC300,a few places are discounting this now,as it's discontinued,eg Empire Direct (http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/productdetailsnew.asp?modelcode=PIO-VSXC300S) .
If you went for this you would need a coaxial > optical convertor as the VSXC300 doesn't have a coaxial input.
Cheers Keith!
Are the outputs decent in terms loudness and range?
(And whats the replacement model like and how much out of interest?)
Have to confess - looks pretty good, and would also be perfect match aesthetically!
Anyone got any opinions on this little pioneer amp?
You'll find some good info on this thread in the bargain forum.
I've ordered one myself, just need to sort out some speakers now.
Hello all again,
Right, just been having a look at this, seems good, and I think superfi should match it.
However I'm gonna need an coax to optical convertor - so first quick questions, whats the cheapest anyones seen for one of these, and I'm not going to lose much quality using one am I?
I've had a look at maplins and they sell one for about £20, so the total that's gonna cost me will be about £120.
The replacement model VSX-C100 is about £190 (cheapest I've spotted unless anyone else has seen it cheaper) and I think that one takes a dig coax direct doesn't it? Is it worth the £90 extra?
Thanx folks
If you were going to get the C300 amp you should have got the 454 player (same as 350 but with optical output). This would have been cheaper (taking into account the optical convertor needed).
The C-100 adds coax input (that should have been there in the first place  ) and does the new pro-logic 2 .
If going to this price level then there are other amps to consider too. The small Pioneer amps have lower power output than its full size cousins.

Its also more powerfull, the older X300 is "only" 30wpc, the newer 100 is 40wpc. Only other main difference, other then the inclusion of optical & coaxial, is it has pro-logic II, the older 300 does not.
HTH
Thanks guys - I know I should have gone for the 454. but I wasn't anticipating the immediate urge I was going to get to add an amp and speakers!
Besides I had amazon voucher to get rid of, and the price difference on amazon is £20, so in the end I wouldn't have lost much if the convertor costs me £20.
Its a tough one; I mean I reckon price difference will be approx £75, taking into account the need to but a convertor.
30wpc vs 40wpc; well I have a medium sized living room; and most amps I've seen chuck out far more sound than is useful anyway; so anybody got an opinion on would I need the 40wpc?
And Pro Logic II, whilst it is meant to be much better than Pro Logic I, movies I watch will generally be on DVD; and I only really use tv for comedy programs or sport or news, so I'm not sure the Pro Logic II is essential.
Might investigate whats the cheapest convertor I can find...
Keith - did you get your VSX-C300 - and are you happy with it?

Yeah, but I won't have my speakers for another week or two,so I've only tried it in stereo.
Do you think the 30wpc is sufficient?

Should be plenty enough for me,medium sized room, will be using a sub/sat speaker package and I'm not likely to be listening at high volume.
I've heard the 40W per channel C100 (with Elac Cinema 1 spkrs) and that was an excellent system, can't see the C300 being any worse.
Can't see how I can go wrong with the C300 for £109 delivered.
