Sounds a bit pricey to me - you can get a new DVDR for less than that, and they're getting cheaper all the time.
You can get a brand new Philips 880 for around £370 online, or the 890 for about £70-£80 more. Go for a brand new machine.
ditto, go for a new 880 model instead, this is the replacement for the 980. It has an additional recording mode and is also MP3 compatible. Even Currys does the 880 for £399 online and £448 instore. Difference with a 890 is that it has a firewire link.

The 890 also has ep+ mode 6hr recording which the
880 does not...

I'm awaiting delivery of an 880, and made the decision not to choose the 890 as I don't see the 6hr mode as worth the extra money as the quality can't be up to much. As for the firewire connection on the 890, I'd rather edit DV footage on my PC then use a DVD-Writer.
What's the betting DVD Recorders are under £300 by this time next year?

At this rate they'll be under £300 by Xmas..
For the last few days I've been very close to buying a Philips DVDR-880 DVD recorder.
However, checking out the dvdplusrw.org forums I've seen horror stories about machines breaking down. The most common problem appears to be machines gradually refusing to play pre-recorded store-bought DVDs and DVD+R media.
Has anyone had difficulties with their Philips machine, or can they reassure me? I'm very keen to get a DVD recorder but don't want to be stuck with ongoing problems.
(BTW, there haven't been many comments on the recording quality. In the best, HQ mode, how well does the picture compare to the original broadcast from Sky Digital via RGB?)
Cheers,
Desk
I totally agree - the ongoing phillips discussions on dvdplusrw.org
are very disconcerting - the main reason why I bought a panasonic instead - still does dvd-r and the timeslip feature is
a real bonus. And to be honest I haven't really heard of many
panasonic owners that are displeased with their purchase.
I may still get a philips in the future, but for now the panasonic seemed like a safer bet.

Barney Tabasco has been trying to contact you for several days and I'd suggest that you contact him ASAP. Have a look at this thread:

I have already emailed him today - the reason I have not emailed him in the past week is because I was on Holiday from work
and have not got internet access at home.

It's probably best to post on Barney Tabasco's thread so that you can sort this out (if emails have been going missing etc.)

That's fair enough mate, but i haven't had an e-mail from you today at all???
I have it sitting in my sent box,
anyway - I have also replied to the original thread as well.

I have had an 880 since shortly after they came out and have not had a single problem of any sort with it. SP recording mode is indistinguishable from the original (eg cable to RGB input) IMHO and the quality of playback for prerecorded stuff looks very good to me, though I am not an expert in these things. It is certainly better than my reliable old wharfedale, which for all its other faults was always rated very highly for picture quality.
I have still to find a disk it doesn't play properly from any region out of over 200 that I have from R1, 2 and 4. So I would have no problem in recommending it. The cost of the media has shot down since they became a mass consumer product - just don't get it in the High Street!
same here. had my 880 for a few months now and never had any problems with playing discs or recording. I don't use it as my main player however, it's mainly used to archive TV stuff
I too am thinking about the Philips 890, and have a few questions:
When will the price of RW discs come done from a fiver to something approaching 2 or 3 quid ?
Can you record from bought and rented videocassettes, or does copy protection work?
Does the old sellotape over the recording indent trick work ?
How's the quality for recording old recorded TV programs to the 4 or 6 hour modes ?
thanks
