Is 1W extremely pathetic?
Question:

Was looking at just a basic cd/radio/casette for a present (to be used in the kitchen) and a few of them were only 1W or 1.2W per speaker. This sounds extremely low, but how quiet is it? loud enough to be heard over the extractor fan?

Answers:

Depends on how sensitive the speakers are and other equipment in the chain.. ie. you can buy tube amps that are rated at only a couple of watts but they can pump out serious volumes wired into the right speakers..
On a wogbox though, I doubt it'd be enough to rattle the windows..

That's what I thought.
Come on Baps, explain yourself.

Why should I explain myself..?

Thanks for the info Baps, is there any way of finding out how loud it is, e.g. setting my computer speakers to a certain volume to see how loud it would be?
Have no idea what this thing is over the name "wogbox", i just assumed it was like a nickname for little cd/radio/casettes, i'm very naive sometimes:D

In short - nope!
The volume you get out depends on the power of the amp, in combination with the power that the speakers need to drive them.
Kinda like comparing a Fiesta with a 1.4 engine and a lorry with a 5ltr engine - the lorry needs more oomph to get it going, so the size of the engine alone will not tell you how fast the vehicle will go. Same with speakers and amps.
Oh, and as regards the other thing, have a look here :
