Fancy remote doo-daaas
Question:

Was thinking about reducing the clutter of remote controls in my living room so looking into this.
I might be able to get my mits on a cheap palm, and there's some remote control software you can get to go with it - isn't there - I was just wondering if it is any good?

Answers:

omni-remote....
tops!
controls my stuff a treat!
tosh 32 telly
philips dvd recorder
sony sky digi box
yamaha a2 amp
rel sub
jvc video
10-15 feet away from most stuff.... no problems with it...

Answers:

Personally I didn't get more than 5 or 6 feet from my palm 3x, or my clie 770. You can buy a plug in module for extra omph, omni-remote even has a 180deg rotate option as the pluging attaches to the other end of a palm from the built in IR.
I've got a pronto instead now.

just nringing this thread back to life but i was wondering where i could get a pronto for cheap :)

I'm looking at some cheapish Sony RM-AV3000's on eBay for less than £100. They control up to 18 devices I think, but aren't as customisable as the Pronto. Can't find many of the latter on eBay or the US online stores.

Answers:

Not sure about cheap, but I got my Pronto from www.letsautomate.com for £149.95.

I'm stuck on whether to go for a Pronto 940, the Sony RM-AV3000 or a Sony Clié PEG-T425 (with remote commander software). The latter choice is a good multi-use option with the standard features of a Palm PDA, but at what degree of compromise over a dedicated device like the Pronto?
Anyone care to say which option they feel is best?

Well, I've inherited a free Palm Vx, and am playing around with omniremote. Problem is the range is poor, but apart from that it would be quite good to use I think.
So does anyone know where I can get a decent booster for this model (the one omniremote sell does not work for the Palm Vx apparantly:()

Answers:

just gone for a pronto (can be had for 99.99 from Richer Sounds with this months What Hi-fi ad)
It seems to be incredibly versatile (am struggling with setting it up now), but will probably be the only expensive remote you ever buy!

Took me over 3 hours with the Pronto Edit software to get my Pronto doing the business. Downloaded a load of .ccf files from the Remote Central website, which made it a bit easier, but I've still got some more work to do to make the thing look better. At the moment the screens are a mixture of other peoples styles, but one day I'll sit down and do my own thing, consistent across all my AV equipment.

Hello all,
Just thought I'd update you - but basically I stuck with the Palm Vx that I inherited for free, and omniremote is a top application; was working all my devices (with solitary exception of the power on of my tv - though it would do the power off!), except the big problem was that it would only work about max 1.5 m and it had to be pointed quite accurately in front of the device (wouldn't work from angles) :(.
I since purchased a small IR Booster - cost me $29 = £18 and I have to confess i really didn't expect it to work that well, but I can now control all devices from upto 10m away (well I haven't tried further because that would mean standing in my garden and its cold  !) so basically it is SUPERB  - something not too much worse than a Pronto for under £20!
All you Palm owners thinking of getting a Pronto, its well worth trying this first!

Well, I was more aiming it from the point that alot of people in various forums didn't rate the Palm Vx as a remote due to the naff range. But the IR Booster I got (from talestuff) really does the biz, and okay it may not be a pronto, but for under £20 it's an awesome solution for me!

As Ethanol said either Buy What Hifi or buy the March issue of What Video Widescreen Entertainment you can get a Philips Pronto RU940 (2MB) from Richersounds for £99 and this offer is on until March 10th, Richersounds online it is still £149.
I got my 2nd Pronto last Thursday from Richersounds I had to order it the day before as it's pot luck finding them instore or some people have found that it is best going to a R.S. store and ask if they have any Philips Pronto's in stock and if they do then from your jacket pocket shown them the advert from the magazine and they should match the price :) Otherwise showing the magazine first will prompt them to say sorry no stock :nono:
Also don't let them sell you a Philips Neo as it not as good or as flexiable as a Philips Pronto and it costs more.
