Yep, has several standards e.g. 480p, 720p, 1080i etc etc (p = Progressive Scan, i = Interlaced)
I have a HDTV Panasonic Projection TV and it does make a big improvement even watching none HD material as they have built in line-doublers to make NTSC not have the visible lines in it :)
So its the telly thats HDTV not the broadcast?
Both,
The TV has to be HD capable and the signal has to be one consisting of an HD standard as mentioned by Kryten.
720p is a standard usually assosciated with variable frame rate cameras.
The japanese have super high definition with 1112 lines(i think),said to be staggering in quality.Try finding an anamorphic widescreen broadcast in the US,let alone a high definition one.

Nice! I know what you mean about finding a anamorphic WS broadcast here :( There are a few letterbox broadcasts on things like Angel/Birds Of Prey/Enterprise etc, but apart from that only if you get certain HDTV broadcasts do you get anamorphic broadcasts :(
The Japanese HDTV system Hi-Vision uses 1125 lines which is a compromise of double NTSC (1050) and double PAL (1250).
NHK were the sole developers of HDTV Worldwide and I had many visit's to their facilities this year.
The quality of their Sattelite Hi-vsion broadcasts is truly gobsmacking. I remember watching the winter olympics and it was very easy on the eyes.
