Question:
Just wondering how much difference I'm likely to see as I'm looking at buying the pioneer 350/454.
At the moment I haven't got a home cinema amp (only a pro logic setup), but I may get one at some point, maybe after xmas.
However, that said, it'll prob be a lower end, more budget (but still reasonable) one, accompanied by similar speakers (anyone got any recommendations btw).
There is also a possibility that I'll get an all in one system (like a decent panasonic one) instead of the separate amp, with the pioneer donated to my parents or something.
I very much doubt you could tell the difference without some very expensive equipment and a lot of time spent in trying to find a difference..... and even then you may not find a difference
There's really no need to go optical for the sound quality
excellent, thats what I thought, £15 more beer money for me then!
It carries a digital signal. So there is no difference.
The general consensus is that coax is easier ,cheaper and no different in quality. With a digital signal, the signal is either there or it isn't. Its not like analogue where less loss of signal in the cable produces better sound quality.
opinions seems to favour the co-ax slightly because dust can get into the optical port thereby deteriorating the signal slightly. Reason why the ports come with a removeable plug.
8-] is basically right. If you're planning long runs >5m I'd use coax. The optical isn't that good over long runs. Several reports document signal loss. However for your average 1-3 metre run, the chances of you finding a different is almost zero.
Simple, Optical is cooler
