well my dad has a cheapo player, and wants to know if he can plug speakers straight into the 5.1 outputs on the player, or needs an amp.

Yes you will need an amp. The DVD player will decode the 5.1 signal but you'll need to connect the outputs to an amp to drive the speakers.

He could use something like a digitheatre where the amp and sub are the same box and satelite speakers are run from that.
Or as an unsatisfactory alternative, you can use self powered PC
style speakers, as I initially did when I first had my LG3350e.
I say unsatisfactory but it was a lot better than the old stereo telly.:p
