Considering a new player - Dilemma!
Question:

I've been considering getting a new DVD player because I got a projector earlier this year and I'd like to get one with progressive scan output.
Unfortunately I'm a bit skint at the moment! Now I know you can get NTSC progressive scan players fairly cheaply but are there any that do PAL progressive as well, also, my current player is a Sony 7700 which in it's time was a fairly high end player, so would I be disapointed with the quality if I changed to a cheaper player or has the general quality of players moved on?
Obviously in an ideal world I'd look at getting a Pioneer 747A (or 757 I think is out now) or maybe one of the new Arcam players but these are both fairly pricey players, would I be better waiting and looking at one of these instead?

Answers:

According to the avforums, PAL progressive players will be arriving in the next few months. There are a couple of cheaper players which claim to do PAL progressive but these are usually firmware hacks which seem to have adverse effects.
There have been reports of hacks to the Denon 2800s and 3800s along with the Toshiba 900? and Harmon Kardon models.
Personally I think it's worth waiting another month or two to see what happens. True PAL progressive players like the Arcam DV88p, DV88+ and DV27 are expensive but they do produce excellent results on PAL/NTSC with a projector. They also compensate for the audio delay in combining the 2 frames.
The Sony 7700 is a fine player so I think you're best saving your pennies at the moment and see what happens - I think Sony might be releasing a PAL/NTSC progressive player.
