Anyone got a Plasma tv ?
Question:

The title says it all really .
Anyone got a plasma tv and if so, what do you have and how do you rate it etc etc etc

Answers:

Do you mean a plasma display or a plasma tv ? If you mean a plasma tv then, no.

Answers:

I assume then you have a plasma screen.
Do you use it for just watching dvd's etc on ? If so, where do you have it located and what do you do with it when you are watching normal TV ?

Answers:

We have one at work which is used for presentations. It has the facility for an external tuner to be connected. This can be a satallite reciever, the tuner from a vcr etc.It sits on a stand though there is a wall mount bracket available. Have a look HERE (http://www.avforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=82) for ideas. :)

Mine is hanging on the wall in my Lounge
and watch everything on it, including the PC, its really spooky playing games and typing emails on a 42" screen,
-- they cost a lot
but every single person who has seen it has commented about how great it looks, I have not stopped smiling since we got it

Just got a Samsung 42" 10 days ago. Installed on the wall, quite high up (the top's about 7ft off the floor).
Fabulous - worth every penny. Not just great for watching stuff, but it makes the whole room look so much better.
Small note - plasma TV wall brackets are an extra cost (around 300 notes) item - so you need to allow for that when working out how much to steal from the piggy-bank.

I wouldn't part with it for a night with Drew Barrymore, Christina Ricci and Thora Birch!

Definately worth the cash then Andy ?
Do you use it daily for general viewing or just for watching dvd's ?

Answers:

General Viewing - it's the main "TV"...

OOOOh you big puff!!!! thats a nice TV mate, my missus has been after one for a while now, i keep saying no because we have a nice CRT. but the more pics i see of them in peoples homes the more im tempted. so whats the quality like then? and whats the price gunna be for a half decent 42" with wall bracket and tuner, does it come with all the imputs you could throw at it too? i need to be convinced its worth selling her car for!! i take it your is a 32"?

Answers:

42", cost me about £3,300 six months ago, can get them for £2.500 nowadays. Quality isn't as good as the best CRT but I find the little bit of posterisation less intrusive than the wavy edges of a CRT...
Stands or wall brackets cost about £300, I got mine thrown in, and I use my VCR as a tuner on the rare occasions I watch terrestrial tv..
As inputs, I route most stuff through the amp..

i have a panny PWD4 plasma
i love it
cost me 3200 incl stand
got video, cable and progressive scan DVD player hooked up.
Just watched Eppy II on it this evening
words cannot describe how good it looks:clap: :D

Answers:

Sounds good mate, does any plasma work with a prog scan dvd player? and will that give me the best picture?

Answers:

I am currently toying with the idea of getting a plasma (probably the 37" Panny) and would like to know about hooking my DVD player up to the component input. Is it as simple as getting a SCART-to-phono or BNC cable, or do I need some kind of standard convertor?
TIA,

Oh! You buggers!!! You've got me "thinking" now!
Mrs Echo sure aint gonna be happy!
I think I am able to wait until they are a bit more affordable really. My Sony 32" will see me through for a few more years yet.
For those of you with them hung on the wall - how do you connect your externals? Do you have a mass of wire crawling up the wall?
Andrew

Answers:

most plasmas will display progressive scan pictures, some will only display NTSC prog scan, but most display PAL prog too (mine does)
Prog scan does give a better picture, especially noticeable on this size set.
I got a john sims converter for my scart output from my cable box.
My dvd player has component out, so i have directly connected it this way. Video is connected through old fashioned composite connection.

Since my DVD outputs RGB over SCART, I assume that I would need to have a convertor. how much does that add to the cost of going plasma?

Answers:

The convertor is about £100-£120, well the John Sims one is.
I think there is one called a syncblaster or something from keene electronics which is cheaper at £70 approx.
I'm not entirely sure but I don't think ALL plasmas NEED a convertor it all depends on what terminal/tuner boards they come with. General consensus seems to be that the Panasonic 42" is the one to go for. There is also a Toshiba badged set which is a clone of the Panasonic '4' series although Panasonic now have a '5' series out although there is a some debate over whether it is an imrovement or not!!
Best pop along to www.avforums.com they have a forum specifically for plasma screens which should help you a lot.
Hoping to get mine in January!!! :rocker:
