Question:
The AV Reciever im getting for chrimbo outputs all these other DTS sounds, like NEO and Matrix or what-ever theyr called, even though at the moment i have only 1 dvd that has these soundtracks, i want to know how many extra speakers do i need and where do they need to be placed, and is it worth the extra cash?
The extra speaker is just a rear centre. Place it between the rears.
What type of speaker mate?
You can just use any centre speaker, the same sort you would use for a front centre. So you'd have:
FL---FCNTR---FR
-
-------Sofa-------
-
RL---RCNTR---RR
They are not rears they are surrounds. Not at all the same thing. I think some people are confusing speaker placements.
As for the rear type, it's generally accepted to use a speaker which is the same as your surrounds. hth
It is now recommended that two speakers are used at the rear and not one. Although they are referred to as "centre rears" that doesn't mean that you have to use a traditional centre speaker and most people don't.
Well i call them rears because they are placed, erm rear to everything else. :p
So if we want to term them perfectly, and possibly more distance between the sofa?

I use a similar speaker to my surround L&R speakers. I only have my amp setup in 6.1 at the moment, but I can wire up as 7.1 giving 2x surround rear which gives better directional sound and stops the ear getting confused between the front center and surround back. However space is my limiting factor here :(
What Amp is it you are getting? Does it have DTS-ES Discreet of just matrix?

Actually the recommended setup is to have surround L&R to your left and right not behind in most cases. See here (http://www.dolby.com/ht/co_br_0110_ListenersGuideEX.html)
EDIT: and here (http://www.dolby.com/ht/Guide.HomeTheater.0110.html#s3.2)
You should be looking to set the surrounds perpindicular to and slightly above the *--------sofa---------* position.
Yeah i know, my room sucks though. Downstairs theres a massive cupboard thing so the speakers have to go there, about a foot behind the sofa and my room is even worse as it's in an enclave so the effects would have to go a foot infront.
One thing with that diagram in the link, i thought the effects were only supposed to be pointing towards you for DPL and in DD5.1 you should have the effects pointing forwards because they're both discrete channels?

For Dolby Digital EX playback, as with regular 5.1 playback, place the left and right surround speakers to the sides of, or slightly behind, your listening position. For the third surround channel, place an additional surround speaker, or, preferably, an additional pair of surround speakers, directly behind the listening area,
Do you we have a conflict of opinion or is someone wrong? i think the set-up in the diagram looks OK, i have a dvd with DTS EX, which is what the picture shows.

I don't! Can't speak for others.

Not really, it is all up to how you can fit your speakers in and what you like the sound of. Seing as you can adjust the timing and volume to a fine point on each speaker then if they are slightly behind or at the side it doesn't matter.
I was merely pointing out the reccomended setup by Dolby for DD-EX.
