Can anyone recommend a great player?
Question:

It has now become necessary to replace my 3 yearold workhorse of a Hitachi DVD player, and to be honest I haven't kept a keen interest in actual DVD hardware, so I'm really interested to hear what players anyone can recommend! I'm looking to buy before (or just after) Xmas.
I have a budget of between £250 - £300. I know I can get a damn decent player for far less, but I want to get as top a spec one as possible.
It has to be multi-region, and RCE proof of course, with the usual full audio / digital outs, but things like progressive scan would be a nice bonus for future use. I don't have any interest in DVD-R, or multi-disc players, but I'd like it to play the full MP3, VCD, CD-R, CD-RW range.
The makes that interest me at the moment are:
Sony
Pioneer
Marantz
Toshiba
Panasonic
Cambridge Audio
Do any of these makes stand out over the others, or should any be avoided like the plague???
I'd also like to hear of good retailers. I'm a Londoner, and tend to go to Richer Sounds, but if anyone else can recommend somewhere better, all the more thanks.
Thanks for all your help!!!

I would pick either Sony, Panasonic or Pioneer.
I do like Sony players. I have a NS900 which also plays SACD. The new version is a 905 which also plays MP3's.
The Pioneer 656A is good and also plays DVD Audio, SACD and MP3's.
I don't like Marantz, they are expensive and are extremely slow. You can press something on the remote and have to wait for something to happen.
The picture quality can also be lot better compared to other makes.
