Help me choose my christmas pressie!
Question:

Hi Gang,
Finally convinced the missus we cant live without Home Cinema, so she's getting me a basic Dolby 5.1 kit for Chrimbo.
Right - advice needed!
Budget is £250 - £300.
I have a Phillips 28" Flat widescreen and a Phillips 612S DVD Player.
So i need a receiver decoder thingy as the DVD player doesnt have this and i need some speakers.
Must all be in silver to match the tele.
All help muchly appreciated!

That's quite a small budget for Home Cinema. You could go for Videologics DTS system. But for seperates try RicherSounds for a nice cheap Receiver, and QED for a set of Eltax speakers (about £140 delivered).
And I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell you about a certain Yamaha system for about £320.;)

Is it? Oh right - ive got a mate who paid 260 quid for the Sonly HTK 215 - and he's quite happy with that.
Whats this Yamaha then?
Can you provide links to your recommendations above?

£260 is a good price for that system, but it's low on power. The yamaha system I was referring to is the Htib45 from Unbeatable for £320 delivered.
The other sites are richer-sounds.com and qed-uk.com.

Would i be better off flogging my existing DVD player and getting a system with a DVD player / amp combined?

Will the Yamaha work with my Phillips 612S DVD player?

You would need to check to see if it has an optical/coaxial socket - if so then your fine. Can't find any reviews on your player though.

TBH - its not a great player. Thing is i've hacked it and it plays all regions fine - so why bother changing it. I'll get nothing for it if i sell it second hand as i dont have the box for it.
I'll have a look at the back of it tonight.
Cheers
ps - i used to have a link with reviews of my player - but cant find them.

It has got a coaxial on the back - it also says something about DTS Dolby over the top of it.
Looks like im sorted.
Only problem now is - will that Yamaha receiver fit under my tv - its massive.

Most decent receivers are quite large, but you can get thinner lower wattage ones (30w per channel) for about £140, if that's all you want.:)
