Advice needed on SUB... - Got the Servo 15, but need help setting up -
Question:

Hi, last year i bought a set of mission speakers (773e + mission rear + centre). This was coupled with a sony strdb940 amp. I would like to add a sub to it now as i find some movied a bit lacking. I do not use this setup for music; just movies.
I am clueless when it comes to subs so i need some advice...
Many thanks,
ShyBoy
EDIT - Got the servo 15, but need help setting up please. (bttom of page 2)

Get something around 150w or more a velodyne is a good bet or one of the yamaha 's, REL quake'S are excellent too or the JBL XTI if you want to blow the doors shut .Run it in mono with a good quality phono lead at 75h ohm . Place along a wall for more bass into the center for less .
Expect to pay £250 - £300 or around 175 for s/h

Answers:

Or look at second hand REL Q 50/100's at around £230-£250 mark.A little more will get a new Velodyne CHT 10.

Answers:

Shyboy, before anyone can give you advice we need to know how much you're looking to spend?

Answers:

ok... I really appreciate your advice.
For a start I have to confess that I did not expect to pay £300 odd pounds for one, but saying that, I rather do that then spend £100 on something that wont improve the sound quality.
I think im looking to just fill out some of the missing bass from the floor standing mission speakers. (every now and then I hear distortions from them when for example a large explosion takes place). Hope this gives you a better idea.
Again, thanks for your advice. like I said im a bit lost when it comes to subs.

Bapapapa - if you are reading this... are you happy with your REL Q100E ?

Answers:

ShyBoy,
My 320 has now been sold. It was a fairly good Sub........BUT the Velodyne from Uncle Eric is about 10 times better
I would say if you have got £325 you will not go wrong with the CHT-10.

A decent sub will not only fill in the "missing bits" that your Missions don't handle as well but will take the deep bass from the LFE output on your amp which you are currently missing out on.
a new Velodyne or a second hand REL Q100, Strata or Storm is the way to go.

fat_bloke - thanks for the advice.
Bapapapa - im a bit confused now (nothing new there...) but have you got both the REL Q100 AND the CHT-10? im asking as i saw u buy both?
ivj - well, i certainly seen good reviews of the REL but cannot find any independent review of the CHT-10.
all that said, im seriously thinking of buying the CHT-10 on eric's recommendation. Does anyone have any reviews of this sub?

Answers:

Been looking for a review too... not even on US sites. I did find a thread on the AV forums today though:

He seems very happy with it.

Just the REL.. I did ask uncle eric for payment details on the Velodyne and was going to buy next week, then the Q100 came up..

ahaa ok. are you happy with it? the CHT-10 sounds really good and all that but it worries me that i cant find any reviews on it... in fact, i cant find much at all on it.

I've caved in and ordered the CHT-10 from Uncle Eric. Hopefully I'll have it by the end of the week.

who is uncle eric?

Answers:

Uncle Eric organises power buys on the avforums - I've ordered the Velodyne CHT-10 sub for £325, normally £385.

Answers:

I got a CHT-10 frm uncle eric too. Not plugged it in yet (redecorating lounge) but will be doing by the middle of Nov.
Quite a few people are replacing REL Q series for the Velodynes (albeit the CHT-15 and above models), so there must be a major difference between them.
I have now heard quite a number of people say that the CHT-10 is far vastly superior to the Q150 and Quake models (although the Q100 and Q200 are still highly rated), and is £125 cheaper (from uncle eric - £75 from dealers). I have demo'd Q150 before and was very impressed, but I can't personally comment on the difference between them until I have heard my CHT-10. At any rate, even if they sound similar, the Velodyne was £125 less so is still a great deal.

if its not here by Friday, ill cancel the order and reconsider my options. Like I said, I could not find one review of the CHT-10 and I have seen the 'if one person says it good then it must be' phenomena before, so im a bit cautious this time round.

Hope you enjoy that bad boy ShyBoy - I set my REL up today and it sounds fab... needs a bit more tweaking but I'm astonished at the amount of detail I've been missing even though I've been using Tannoy Rev floorstanders set to large...

Answers:

I hope to get my CHT-10 on Friday from Uncle Eric. My Sony DB930 has the front's set to large for my Castle Harlech floorstanders.
Bap, are you using the sub just for .1 i.e. is it connected just to the sub channel on your AV amp? I'm curious how much detail is output via this channel for dialogue scenes.

Answers:

I took delivery of my Servo 15 a couple of weeks ago, and trust me....this thing will blow your socks off.
It is a TRUE subwoofer, i.e it will extend below 20hz (where you start to feel the bass instead of hearing it) whilst maintaining it's output.........I suggest you stick something like Saving Private Ryan in or the ice field sequence in Titan AE, crank it up and be ready for your trousers to flap! (and I mean that literally).
Stunning.
A single servo 15 completely destroys 2 x REL Storms (£1600!) - with ease.
You will not be disappointed.
:D

Yeah, just the .1 channel at the moment (haven't yet connected the 'neutrik' cable I got that connects to the speaker terminals) , and I've set all the speakers to small so everything below a certain hz gets set to the sub..
I had all my speakers set to large before and now everything just seems clearer, less strained and more enveloping.
It's fun when the whole room shakes.. neighbours prolly not happy though..

Answers:

Must dig out the manual for my DB930 and read what it says about sub connection and speaker size settings. I'm hoping it will help to enhance the centre channel which now seems "too small" since I upgraded to a projector.
Thanks for the feedback.

That is one of the things im looking forward to; releasing the potential of the Mission 773e. Im always worried when there is a lot of base in a film as i hate the sound of distortion. I remember getting some quite bad distortion in the beginning sequence of Event Horizon.... always gets me worried that the speakers will get damaged.
I hope to get my CHT-10 on Friday from Uncle Eric.
hope you enjoy it. only read good things about it in the avforums.
You will not be disappointed.
Hope not. :)

I never had any distortion with my R2s, but I did have to turn the volume quite high to get any sort of rumbling bass going...

Well.... it was only on event horizon, so I suspect it has something to do with the crap soundtrack.
BTW, what cable did you use to connect the sub with? Any recommendations?

WOOOHOOOO!!!!
Just received my Sub and although i did not pay for the X-30, i received it also! Not bad for £500
Anyways, i need to set it up now, and im a bit uncertain how to do it.
On my str-db940, i set all the speakers to small. But i also have to set the crossover frequency (i think) and this is the bit im not sure about.
I have the following Mission speakers:
fronts: 773e - 50Hz-20kHz +/3dB (-6dB at 38Hz)
rears: 77DS - 100Hz-20kHz +/-3dB (-6dB at 88Hz);
centre: 77c1 - 75Hz-20kHz (-6dB at 65Hz);
Any idea what i need to set them up for?
Any help will be appreciated :)

Answers:

ok... im going to try and set all the speakers up to 120 crossover...

Answers:

If your amp allows different crossovers, try 80Hz as this is the crossover recommended by THX

Answers:

it allows 180,120,90,60.... so ill try 90. Is this for all speakers or just the fronts?

Answers:

Try all speakers as small. You may find that 60Hz is too low which would give you a dip in the frequency response so 90Hz will probably be the best compromise

Answers:

will try that today. thanks.

Bear with me on this. I had a chance to test the sub today. Please bear in mind that I have never owned a sub before, but I have to say it feels a bit underpowered. By that I mean, it has plenty of bass but the dial has to be mid way for it to be significant. When reading some reviews, they mention that they could not test it to full power as its too loud, suffice to say I do not have this problem I had my STR db940 volume dial at the 8 o’clock position and could happily put the sub at full power. Although it is quite loud, it is not as thumping as I would have expected from reading the reviews and personal comments on this bored and others. Is this right?
Also, the on off switch is the wrong way round. I.e. when it’s in the on position it’s actually off? Would you get the unit exchanged for this? What do you think?
If you own one of these, I would really appreciate your thoughts.
