Question:
All,
I'm looking for a wife friendly home cinema setup. I've got £600 to spend. Everybody raves about the Kef Eggs but I'd blow the budget just on speakers and have no DSP. I have two options.
1. Give my old Toshiba 2109b to my dad and buy an all in one Sub/Sat system e.g. Sony DAVS800 or DAVS880
2. Keep my Toshiba which I'm happy with and buy a Sub/Sat amp system. e.g. AE Aego P5
Initially I was all for the Sony DAVS880 when it comes out. It looks awesome, but obviously I haven't heard it yet ( and i'm not buying it just coz it looks nice :-) ). Any how, now i've heard on forums and mags that the AE Aego P5 is very good and i'm stuck. So what i'm looking for is this. Can people who own Such systems e.g.
Sony DAVS800, DAVS880, AE Aego P5
Let me know there feelings on performance/sound quality. The Aego, on paper, does look low on power and doesn't have Prologic II. The Sony looks great on paper, but I haven't heard it.
Mark.
I've always been very impressed by the Aego system after hearing it at the Bristol Show. Several of my friends have bought them (4 at the last count) and are all very happy with them.

Nigel, i've noticed you praising the Aego. How does it handle filling a room with sound ? How large are your friends living rooms ? What's the base like ?
Mark.
The bass is produced by the mid/sub-woofer and can be adjusted with a volume and bass controller. The room being used was about 12 x 12 feet and it was filling that well - the speakers were mounted at chest height (head height while sitting) around the room and the centre on top of the telly.
Your best option is to get a demo.
Cheapest place was Sound and Vision or Digital Direct for around £499.
If you like the Aego speakers - and I do - there are some other options. I liked the idea of the P5 but wanted more flexibility on the inputs, DPL2 etc. Here's my crazy set-up: I've got 3 pairs of Aego 2s (each set contains a sub with amplification for 3 channels and 2 satellite speakers) which I picked up for £75 a pair (they're £99 at a number of places now, and I got Empire Direct to do their price promise, bringing their price down from £222, though I notice they're not on their site now). I then got a new Yamaha 630 (not the receiver, just the amp version) for £280 (you can get it for £269 at Hyperfi, or maybe even a Marantz 4200 for £199 at Richer would do). This is a brand new model with all the bells and whistles. I connected my Aegos up to the pre-outs on the Yam, and even have a rear centre channel. I have all the subs tucked away out of site - one is used for the front 3 channels, one for the rear 3 and one just given over to sub duties. You could I guess get away with just using 2 subs, and perhaps buy 2 sets of Aego 2s and buy a single satellite speaker as a fifth channel.
Unconventional, but effective and flexible.
I bought the AE Aego P5 set up last week and I am very impressed with it. I decided to go for the system after what hifi voted it there best system under £600.
I bought mine from www.audiovisiononline.co.uk for £479 which also inc 12 months intrest free credit

Just been to their website. Can't find the interest free credit offer though. Do they sell the Black or White version? Cheers.
Oh, I've found it. Thanks for the info. That would save me 20 quid. Cheers. :notworthy
