Question:
Please help me.. I'm a little confused.
I have a Samsung 807 which I've owned since the dawn of DVD time. It's now becoming antique.. the picture jumps now & again so it's time to buy a new one.
My Sammy807, like my TiVo, my Digibox & my VCR.. causes my Widescreen TV to 'autoswitch' between 16:9 and 4:3 modes depending on whats playing. The TV's a Thomson 32" and picture format is set to 'automatic'
Today I bought a Dansai 955 from Tesco.
Set up. Tested... and it doesn't auto switch. Any anomorphic WS DVD's are compressed into a 4:3 format until I go into the TVs menus to manully switch the format (a pain in the a**e!)
SO.. I takes the Dansai back to Tesco to get a refund.. telling the bloke the above. He begrudgingly gave me my money back but claimed that most DVD players won't auto-switch (HIS pioneer doesn't!) and that my Sammy must be a one off.
Is he telling Porkies? Do most autoswitch WS formats?
I was gonna try the Bush2024 but didn't fancy having to take that back too.
How've you got it connected up?
My Pioneer 747 auto-switches my 32" Thomson perfectly, unless I connect my TiVo to RGB2 and watch an NTSC disk.
Most of the budget brands don't send the signal to autoswitch.
Its probably because they plays so many formats (Its only usually DVDs that are anamorphic).
My LG autoswitched, but my Dansai 852 doesn't . I have also read posts that the Alba and Wharfedales don't either.Expect the same for all budget cheapies.
Its got to be RGB for it to autoswitch too. The signal is a certain voltage on one of the scart pins. If you connect via composite cables or SVHS it wont autoswitch.
If you want auto switch you will have to buy a reputable brand.
There are plenty of bargains out there such as Tosh SD220 under £110 (R2 but a mutiregion firmware that is downloadable off the net).Pioneer 350 multiregion under £120.
It was connected fully wired SCART to RGB SCART 1.
Like I said, the Samsung autoswitches fine.
I was thinking of trying the Tosh 220E.

Not quite true; my LG would sometimes autoswitch when I had it hooked up to S-Video, depending on the disk (mainly R2s). Not a problem on RGB; but some R2 disks seem to continually autoswitch into widescreen (i.e. the 'widescreen' message pops up on the TV screen every few minutes). Bit of a pain.
My old Wharfedale didn't autoswitch at all.

So many films, so little time...
My Toshiba 110 DVD autoswitches the TV to widescreen correctly. It is connected by a scart cable. As sais above it is the scart cable that carries the signal to switch to widesceen.

Not necessarily.
There are two methods of auto-switching. SCART Pin 8, and Line 23.
Both of my pioneers auto switch:)

Yep.. But how many DVD players will use the line 23 method ? !!!!!
I would be surprised if any did . This is more for TV broadcasts (and not yet used by BBC or ITV :( ). Its probably the TVs tuner that reads the line 23 signal (the tuner is bypassed by a S-video or RGB input).
Has anyone got their DVD player connected by S-video with it autoswitching .
Yes,
I usually have my widescreen tele set to 14:9.
Most PAL DVD's (inc R4) switch to Widescreen automatically.
R1's usually need to be switched manually.
DVD Panasonic A350
Tele Philips 28" Widescreen
DVD connected via SVHS
Sky Digibox connected RGB (Autoswitches OK)-
Confused now!
After the above.. I was all set to spend my pennies on a Tosh SD220E.
I emailed Toshiba UK about the switching.. just to be sure, and got this..
Thank you for your recent enquiry. Please find the information that you requested as follows:
Unfortunately the SD220E DVD player doesn't have this feature on it, so you would need to change the picture size manually.
