Can someone please guide in the right direction in order to make the right purchase of a stand alone
DVD recorder receiver ?
Which manufacturer ?
Which type to choose DVD-R, -RW -RAM ?
Perhaps a url which gives comparisons etc..?

I think it depends what you want it for. I looked at these a couple of months back when our trusty VCR went flakey.
There seem to be two main models representing the different formats, Phillips and Panasonic. Both record to DVD and give quality as good as the input source. The basic models are sub £500. The Phillips is a little bulky and a cheap plastic case (but that may not bother you) and its DVDs should play back on standard DVD players. Panasonic have one with a hard disc and Firewire input also for ~£850 which is the one I am waiting for the price to drop more on. The hard disc gets you more recording time and is useful if you want to record/edit DV from a camcorder.
could be wrong but I ain't heard of any combined DVD recorders and Recievers...
