Question:
I've just bought a surround-sound kit. Its made up of 4 satellite speakers with stands, front speaker and sub. Although I know how the general layout of the speakers should be, I've got a rectangular room with the TV diagonally in the top left hand corner of the shorter wall. If you imagine an A4 sheet in front of you, the top left with settee along the right hand wall.
Also I can change the volume of each individual speaker from 0-10. Is there any standard volume these should be or is it just a case of what is loud enough for each film.
Finally, can you name a good film I can use to witness the quality of the 5.1?
Thanks very much!:)
I love the surround on The Matrix :)
Usually action films have the most obvious surround sound, i like the fast and the furious it's also very good if you have a good sub.
For setting individual speaker levels a sound level meter is the best option, you can get one here (http://www.cornwallelectronics.co.uk). You can do this by ear, but I found that using the meter made a huge difference to the overall sound.
As far as demo discs go Saving Private Ryan R1 DTS is one of the best, my personal favourite is Lord Of The Rings R1 DD.
Hope this helps.
Positioning:
Centre speaker on top of or below the TV.
Left and right speakers: Ideally - in a straight line with the TV (and centre speaker) about 8 feet apart - with the TV and centre speaker exactly central.
Rears - just behind and slightly above the listening position.
There is no ideal solution for the layout of room you describe. You either have to compromise on this ideal placing or move the TV.
Thats a great help!. Thanks guys!. I'll get one of those sound meter's too I think.
Thanks again. You can always count on the forums!

If you want to borrow my soundmeter for the evening you can as long as you can get into Cardiff city centre to pick it up and give it back - I know they're not expensive but you won't use one more than a couple of times.
Get yourself to WHSmiths and pick up WideScreen Magazine - the free DVD has 6 Dolby Digital trailers - they sound fantastic in surround sound :)
Thats very kind of you AndyPearce! . I'll let you know, and we'll arrange it. Otherwise, my dad thinks he may be able to get one from work, but I'm not exactly sure he knows what it is!?!
Thanks too to you MrFlibble. That, I will do too. Too many too's in that sentence wasnt there. It was too much. This is getting too much.
