Question:
lo anyone bothering to look.. . im currently in the market to buy a new set of headphones.. my first set in fact... so any info would be most welcome......
certain sets keep comming up such as the senn HD580 precision and the beyerdynamic DT 231.. and a few others .. but id like maybe advice from ppl that own em and maybe some decent places to buy?? best i can find the HD580`s for is 79.95 inc delivery, and the beyers for near half that.... but whats the difference between the 2 like?? is it worth the extra 40 odd quid for the 580`s?
thnx for takin any time to help.....
I've got the Beyer's which I originally bought for use with my portable DVD and I have to say they're very good. They're quite small, handy since I wanted a reasonably portable pair with very good bass. They don't quite fit over your ears but are comfortable to wear for long periods - I tend to use them at work to listen to CD/MP3's
I think the Sennheiser's are better if you can find them. They fit snuggly over your ears so cut out more of the background noise and have less leakage if you're worried about disturbing others.
But as you say, do you really want to pay double? Try and get a demo if you can.
I do like Sennheiser's (my old pair were about 20 years old) but wanted to change and do to money probs I went for Technics and think they are better.
They were £45 and the model was RPF800. They fit over the ears and also cut out all the outside noise as they are closed headphones. They have excellent bass.
I've got the Sennheiser HD580s and they are an excellent set of headphones. I got them from the Bargain Forums back in 2001 for £60 (from Empire Direct - unfortunatelyt they have put their price up to about £90 now). They replaced an aging pair of BeyerDynamics that I'd had for about 15 years and have done an excellent job to date.
I got my 580 for £55 2 years ago with Richer Sound's price promise guarantee, doubt you can get them that cheap now but worth asking them to price match the cheapest place you've seen them in. The 580 are worth every penny at £80, I have the HD600 and they sound so similar and I bet most people can't tell the difference. And only with the best source and amp can you tel there is a slight improvement with the HD 600, but we are talking geeky headphones obsessions territory here !
can you let us know where you saw the 580's for £79
thaks alot
was from a place called Harrow Audio.. no web saite... and when i phoned i got told it was the new 590`s and not the 580`s... dunno which is best.... now to make matters worse i have been told about another make... AKG... the 401 got good reviews and i managed to find some K 270 studios for 69,99... got a 5 star review at 130 odd quid sp maybe a good buy at 70.... man.. i hate makin decision like this.. :0(
thnx for the input though,,, any other opinions?? :0)
Another vote for the Beyers  They are miles better than Sennheiser's IMO.
The 580 is better then the 590.
Unbeatable sell the Sennheiser HD580 headphones for £74.96 + £7.99 delivery.
Have a look here (http://www.unbeatable.co.uk/default.asp?page=product&sku=311588&shopid=SHOPIBIGBCBCCIGMNQ1185MTCA5183GNHN8562)
A total of £82.95 is still a good price
The 580s are wonderful. I bought them at £99 some time ago in Richer Sounds and they're worth every penny. Haven't tried the Beyer so can't comment but can recommend the Senns.
yup i went fot the senn 580`s for 80 quid from unbeatable,, thnx m8 for postin that link :0)... now just the wait till they arrive :0)))).. and then theres the 100 hours burn in time b4 i can use em :0(
bugger.. oh well.. those who wait and all that...
thnx again for all the advice
What are you planning on doing to burn them in?
find a good bassey track or album and just let it run constantly on loop for 100 hours at a meduim volume lvl..
many ppl dont even know that headphones need a burning in time... but they wont be even close to there best sound unless u do.. unless u manage to listen to 100 hours of loud music alrdy.. ;)
At £80 the only headphones you should are the Grado Grado SR-60's (http://www.gradolabs.com/product_pages/sr60.htm) :smokin:
although the grados are highly rated... they are not a match for the sennhieser 580`s... also depending on what music u like the grados tend to add to much bass where the 580 provide a much more neutral sound.. but i spose its all personal taste at the end of the day :0)

Thanks
wahaaay!! i caved in after 75 hours of burning!!! i just couldent hold out any longer i had to listen!.. and how sweet it is... im running mine through an ONKYO tx 595 amp atm.. and even though its a 450 quid amp it still aint got the juice to power these properly... with such a high impedance of 300 no standard seperate amp will ever do these headphones justice.. so ive alrdy commisioned a headphone amp to be made for me... :0) im told by numourous people that it makes a huge difference in quality with these headphones.. and only around 150 quid :0)... anyone else inteseted should do a search for a home made amp kit called a meta42.. trust me.. for the increase in quality it gives its truly worth it if u love music like i do :0).... then u got the upgraded connector cables as well.. a nice clau blue should only set u back 100 quid for a 9 foot length with fitted connectors ready to use with the senn 580/600..... man.. i can see my bank balance takin a large hit over the next few weeks :0).. well.. im off to enjoy some more toons!
hope this was helpfull..... oh.. and its true from all the info i have gatherd in my search for a set of headphones.. the senn 580/600 models are regarded as some of the best headphones money can buy.. in a different league from the bayer 231 ( but i here the beyer 250`s are close in comparison so ill be on the lookout for a set of them at a good price as well :0)
well.. im off... enjoy!
Just had a quick read of this thread, are you guys saying that new headphones need to be 'run in' for about 100 hours before they hit best sound reproduction ?

I was none the wiser before Chivalry told me about this, but then he sounds like he is a real audiophile and I suppose I am just a lowly audiophilistine.
wel.. i say "100 hours" but it depens on how thorough u are :0).. but yes... a good set of reference/studio quality headphones need to be burnt in.. for 50 hours at least.. im not talkin about the 10-15 quid things u buy in comet... u could burn them in for 1000 hours and they will allways sound ***** :0)...
.
Just reading over this old thread so I thought I would bring it back to life. I'm really struggling tofind a pair of Sennheiser 580 as they have been replaced. Is the replacement better or worse? Also what are the 570's like? Is there much difffrence between the two?
Thanks:)
The 580 is supposed to be replaced by the 590, but it's actually a different "kind" of phone as it's brighter then the 580. The 600 is more of the same as the 580, and it's what I call the next model up fromt he 580. And the 580 was the poor man's 600 really, 95% of the sound and 1/2 the price.
Thanks for that. :) What about the 570?
