Question:
I am looking to change to an av system, from a valve based hi fi set up. I have a budget of around £2000- 2500, for dvd to replace the wharfdale 750, and arcam alpha5cd front ends, The amps and speakers will be the problems, the wife wants away from large speakers so something small would be good. The system will be mainly for dvd's but as its the main room I still need cd playback and not through the dvd. A good allround set up is required any ideas please.
cheers

musicman - I know you'll have heard this over at the av forums but...
I still think your best off getting some sort of addon to your existing kit.
Most ( probably all ) of the stuff you'll be looking at will have full range of 6ch inputs and outputs ( high end denons/yamahas ect).
Use your 2 ch valve to power your mains ( and you can still connect thsi directly to the CD player, or route this thro the av amp).
Use the av amp to drive the centre and rears. Your budget may even stretch to some tag-mcclared stuff.
Yep, I'd go with RobDickinsons' advice and add to your existing system rather than entirely replace it with an AV amp. Get an AV amp to drive your left and right rears and mid and loop back the line output for the front left and right back into your 2 channel amp.
ok , I understand this, does mean a seperate amp for the rears or something like the yamaha processor will it drive the centre and rears. As I already have a seperate pre amp how does it all connect up?I also need good small speakers - any ideas.

The only musical AV receivers I`ve heard recently have been the Marantz SR8200 and Sr9200, and the Arcam AV8 combi. Only the SR8200/9200 would be in your budget:( Why not keep the existing system you have as a dedicated music system in another room, i.e bedroom / dining room?
Just a though...
Thanks Justin, I have thought of that but would like an all in one system, my current set up is maybe just a bit good to keep as a second system. Can anyone help with the speakers?

The yamy E-800 does have amplification for the center and rears.
But you can use ANY AV amp to do this. So long as it has main left and right line outs ( which they almost all have full 6 ch line outs).
Put the left+right phono line outs into your existing preapms line in ( aux/cd/whatever). keep your mains connected to your valve amp and connect the centre/rears to new av amp.
Turn valve preamp up to 50% then calibrate. you do this by either ear or sound presure meater ( i use my ear). You adjust the vol control onthe valve pre to a level where it sounds eaqual to the centre/rears ( will be around 50% if same wattage/efficiency).
Then you dont touch the valve preamp volume again.
Prolly the best small speakers are the Kef ones, although I think theres a few that get close to them now.
My suggestion is that you get some decent AV amp, doesnt have to be that super, for 2ch music you can still leave your CD player connected to the valve pre amp and use as you have always.
thanks Rob, thats looks a possibilty , suggestion on the good av amp?
